Venus from Friday Jan 7

Post by KMH »

I was able to image Venus again on Friday, about 27-28 hours before conjunction, when it was about 5.5 degrees from the sun. The seeing was below average, but quite a bit better than on Wednesday. All were taken with an Explore Scientific 127ED refractor and no cameras were melted (!).
#1 2.5x Powermate and Celestron Skyris 445 color camera;
#2 4x Powermate with mono Grasshopper camera and Baader near IR (>685nm) filter;
#3 4x Powermate with Grasshopper and nIR filter - longer exposure and inverted to better see the partial ring caused by atmospheric (Venus') refraction.

There is not a complete ring - it's too far from the sun for that. It looks like about 270 degrees. Note also the brighter area of the crescent at about the 5 o'clock position and the asymmetry of the refracted ring. I've seen these reported by others so they are apparently real - I guess indicating non-uniformities in Venus' clouds??

Three excellent captures of Venus Kevin.

The refracted ring really does show very well and any Venusian atmospheric-clouds would likely be the cause...

Thanks for sharing
