Sunset and after dark - 25 January 2022

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

The cold, clear skies have carried on into this week and I caught his pic of the setting sun on my way home from work on Tuesday night.

The skies were clear after dark, so I set the newly mounted Orion EON 130ED scope up fro some deep sky imaging. I have been trying to make a greater effort on deep sky for years and maybe this winter I can get back into it. I did many, many hours of deep sky back in film and slide days, but it has fallen to the side with only occasional efforts in the past 20 years.

The images below were taken at prime focus (f7), and used an Optolong l_Extreme filter with the ASI294MC cooled color camera. M1 is a stack of 10x5min exposures and M35 is a stack of 10x3min exposures. The Horse Head Nebula required two separate sets of images to catch it all, and the split between the two is visible in the lower part of the image. This is made form stacks of 12x5min exposures.

Nice photos Brian.
It's always nice to go back to what you did years ago. Congratulations on your new telescope! Did you use field flattener?

Lovely stuff Brian.
I still have a scope made for deep sky work ( built in the days of film ).
Moved home to a site with rubbish light pollution and never used it.
Still wish I could make the effort to give it go.
More power to your elbow.
Best wishes,
David

Ivan, Alexandra, and David....

Thanks for your comments and feedback on these images :bow Now I need to practice image processing the deep sky targets, but happy with these for now ;)

Ivan, I have had the scope for 9 months or so but it has mainly been used for solar work. I have the flattener but it was not used since the focuser that it threads onto is away of repair.

David, light pollution is a major nuisance for viewing/imaging anything but the planets and maybe some double stars if you can find them. The sky glow type of filters help, but in really bad conditions the use of narrow band filters can still work.
