Outstanding Solar Outreach Monitor

Post by Starry Jack »

I am using a 15" OLED flat panel powered by a cell phone brick for solar outreach. It is 500 nits in brightness which means I can display the sun with only very modest shade provided by sticking the monitor in a black storage bin on a tripod.

$250 on Amazon.

The rig is a 6" Mak Cas with a Quark h-alpha and external ERF (energy rejection filter).

It also makes it a joy not to have my head stuck under a blanket to focus or enjoy the image. Most laptops are under 100 nuts I believe but this is 500.

An interesting idea. For me having a tight sunshade is as much about (insufficient) monitor brightness, as it is about it reflecting the day-bright surroundings, which annoys even with a matte-finish display. But I guess with a sufficient amount of nits this gets less noticeable. Definitely something to consider once I can do my shooting from balcony/terrace, and not having to drive to a spot and pack/unpack each time.

I agree the glare is well managed with this bright screen so that sticking my head in the box is sufficient to give lovely enjoyable views without sweating to death!
