Especially from mid fall to mid spring our backyard critter cam sometimes sees mountain lions - this one came through the snow last night. I don't think they would bother us if we were outside at the scope, but they do dampen our enthusiasm for night-time imaging a bit! They do seem to come around more frequently near the new moon. Another advantage for solar!

Re: Backyard visitor last night
WOW!!!! what a catch on the trail cam
In the UK we have nothing that could kill us (wildlife I mean) and this was something we felt so unused to when we visited Canada for the first time at Christmas (2000/01). We were merrily walking for a whole day through the mountains and woods in the snow with not a care in the world. When we got back that evening we saw on the news someone had been killed by a mountain lion about 6 miles from us that woke us up! We thought all was safe as the bears were asleep.

Rainer - that would be very cool. There was something on the news not too long ago about an ocelot sighting maybe (don't remember for sure) 100 miles from here. But I've never heard of any more locally.
Alexandra - yikes - how terrible! Around here black bear attacks (on humans) are more frequent. They generally are mellow-ish but the cases have involved someone inadvertently getting between mother and cub. We see them fairly regularly and sometimes while we're outside and a bit close for comfort. We always have bear spray with us out back.
If I recall you mentioned foxes recently, so thought I would add the picture below. It's pretty unusual to see them during the day.

Re: Backyard visitor last night
Awesome catch on the trail camera Kevin
We have the usual fox/wolf/coyote populations year round and the black bears are hibernating at present.
There has been a story of a Cougar (Mountain Lion) in the vicinity of my brothers farm for several years running, though till I see a conclusive picture I'm going to stay on the fence...a tall fence maybe
