Sun & Ice
Hi,
it's my first post in the thread here
Last week I escaped from work to the beautiful Lake Baikal in Siberia, the frozen space covered with ice up to 1 meter or even more, with amazing nature. Storms and strong winds over the frozen lake, which locals call nothing but the Sea, in late autumn create bizarre ice patterns on the coastal rocks with caves, in the dry frosty air everything sprouts crystals of ice "grass". We drove hundreds of kilometers on the hovercraft on the beautiful and so different surface with ridges of ice hummocks, with methane bubbles frozen in the thickness and various crystal patterns of the transparent ice, that crack so loudly at night.
In such a microclimate, where there are many sunny days a year, on a mountain slope above a huge reservoir of cold water all year round, there is a 25-meter tower of the LSVT (The Large Vacuum Solar Telescope), the Baikal Observatory of the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics. In winter it does not work, under the closed dome of the tower I saw only the frozen 1-meter mirror.
Thanks for looking
Leo

Re: Sun & Ice
Wow! what an amazing experience and thank you so much for sharing these wonders with us. We are so lucky to have people all over the world to bring these experiences to us so that we can enjoy. It is a like a magical world from science fiction, yet our own planet is equally as strange and unique as other planets.

Re: Sun & Ice
Leonid, these are great photos! Some of them seem to be made on another planet, they are magically beautiful. Thank you for showing us this beauty.

Re: Sun & Ice
Thanks to all for kind comments, very appreciated!
Yes, it was quite cold there. The days started below -30°C, when there was a picnic on ice, I warmed up vodka in my hands before drinking
regards
Leo

Wow, I thought Colorado winters were bad, lol. You are a stronger human than I am, I'd wither away in such cold, lol!
