I have been following Valery's posts here and it is very disturbing. Besides our posts here, I communicated with him years ago as he was developing a product (Chromacor) that could be used with an achromat refractor to convert it into an apo scope I was one if not the first to get one and I also reviewed it on Cloudy Nights Forum. Those were some very valuable lessons on optic design for a newbie and I appreciated his taking the time to work with me to understand the principles and optimizing that setup for my refractor.
Sad that monster has put such a beautiful country and its people through hell.

Dear friends,

At this point, there is no particular danger for me and my family.
But this may change when our troops begin to liberate my city from the occupation of it by wild orc troops. Then nothing can be ruled out and any misfortune can happen. As you probably know, many of our cities and villages have been literally reduced to rubble by the troops of these wild Putin orcs. Kherson is not guaranteed from the same sad and terrible fate.

I am infinitely grateful to those who helped Ukraine in this fight against global evil, as well as to those who simply sympathize with the Ukrainians without having the practical opportunity to help them.

All the best,

Valery.

Thanks Valery, I was hoping that no news meant that everything was quite stable for you at the moment. I haven't heard about anything happening in Kherson so I was hoping you were safe for the moment. Good to hear, and stay strong.

Still alive and safe.

Now we need to leave our home and become a refuges.

We are afraid that russian orks will shoot our city with missiles and by long distant artillery and will aim them at civilian areas.

Will let you know then.

Thanks for your support.

if you look at the results of the vote at UN to remove Russia fom the human rights council, that's the case for european and north-american countries :) , but unfortunately that's not the case for several countries in South America (including Brazil) and most of them in Asia and Africa (including India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and all petrol Emirates, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan, Vietnam) which have political and/or economical interests with Russia. 93 in favour, 24 against and 54 abstention

Exactly. It's Anglosphere + EUrope and some other countries.
Sanctions seems not working against Russia, their effect is quite contrary - according to even anti-Putin sources in Russia, the popular support for that "special operation" is growing (and any dissent is suppressed)...
Most troubling is that Western diplomats seems to abandom diplomatic means to solve that conflict...and Russia isn't former Yugoslavia/Iraq/Libya/etc. that can be deal with easily from military POV...

Yes, Peter, I am still in Kherson. It is not easy - to find a releable relatively safe way to leave the city and
get to a more safe place.

If nothing prevents, we should leave in a 1-2 days.

Yes, Peter, I am still in Kherson. It is not easy - to find a releable relatively safe way to leave the city and
get to a more safe place.

If nothing prevents, we should leave in a 1-2 days.
Thanks for the information, Valery.
I feel grief that you are faced with this terrible choice.
It is a horrible option for you to leave everything behind but who knows what worse things could happen if you stay.
Right now it is your life and the lives of your wife and your daughter that matter most.
Someday you will rebuild what you’ve lost.
I hope you can find safety soon.

Thank you for keeping us posted.
Peter

Good luck and stay safe Valery, I really hope you manage to find a safe way out. It is so hard to work out which is the best decision and I can't even imagine what it must be like to make these decisions and be forced to leave everything you know and love. But remember, you have many friends you can draw help from.

Hello all,

I just received this from Valley:

Tue, Apr 19, 9:00 PM
to me

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your care. We are safe and unharmed for now.

Tomorrow we should leave our home, our city Kherson.
And tomorrow my daughter will reach 16. I hope we will celebrate it tomorrow evening.

I still hope we will be back. I hope soon.

I will keep you (all you) updated if I have access to the I-net.

Best regards,

Valery
