WL two spots York UK

Post by nicspenceryork »

I was thrilled to image for the first time in 5 months in my new DIY observatory yesterday.
Like you Terry, I thought the area to the left of the named sunspots might be named so I included it in the image!

Image20220225 1454 Sun WL AR2954 AR2955 by Nic Spencer, on Flickr

I'm a mid ability imager with mid range kit: Skywatcher 80 ED DS Pro, UV-IR filter, Solar continuum filter, Celestron AVX, FlatCap, Herschel Wedge, ASI178MM, 2 x barlow.

Going to try zooming with WL again this morning in an hour of clear sky until I embark on h alpha again tomorrow!
All the best,

Many thanks Nic for sharing your excellent CaK capture and yes indeed you caught the little one too.

In fact I think the numbering-crew are still asleep, as no number yet issued this morning, but also the newbie seems to have weakened slightly since last-night.

Will be interesting to see your zoom results as and when.

Best Wishes
Terry

Very nice white light Nic. The Evostar ED’s are really excellent scopes, in my experience. You can get a lot out of them. Resolution is great. Well done 👍

Thank you gentlemen, I appreciate your support.
Seeing (even before the zoom in) was disappointing so here's the best "warts & all' I could do! The best bit was the first visitor to the obsy who'd never seen the sun through a telescope before. We had a really interesting discussion about it and he's returning tomorrow to see the difference between these WL images and H alpha through the quark tomorrow when the forecast promises better conditions!

That last image is absolutely excellent Nic.
"Warts" and "Porridge" have come out very well.

Can you tell me the imaging-train, as I also want to try out my Barlows for something nearly as good.

Thanks vm

Terry,
or flapjack!

I used an ASI178MM screwed in a tilt adapter (although maybe that’s not needed for WL, not sure!) and then within the sensor's nosepiece adapter I screwed a solar continuum filter and a uv/ir filter. That then sits in the 2x barlow which then sits in where the eyepiece goes into the herschel wedge. The first image from yesterday had a ROI 3096x2080 and today’s zoom in had a ROI of 2048x1080. 2048x1080 is the furthest zoom in I’ve ever tried in good seeing which had a great result in my opinion but the seeing was tons better that day. This was the image:

Hope you have fun experimenting with it and I'll watch out for your results,

Thank you Nic. (not sure what "flapjack" refers too, but I'll guess)...
Anyhow yes the train does show me some other things I can try, as have masses of filters, Barlows etc., which still haven't yet been tried-out, so I will refer to this - as and when...

Next is to re-install the Sodium Quirk (cus James like those images), but with the SW80ED Esprit did produce some excellent images last year from the main-obsy. It failed to perform well in the new mini-obsy with that horrible Orion ED80T-CF scope and the low-down Sun...

Cheers
Terry

Nic,
These are as good if not a bit better than my best white light images to date. What surprises me here is that I can see individual granules in your images. While not as clear or as good as I have seen in larger apertures the fact that they are visible individually at all in an 80mm scope I find amazing! It shows that you have a good scope and good processing skills.

I bet if you had really good seeing and a 430nm filter you would have brought the granules out even better.

Very nice, Nic. WL images often don’t get the justification they deserve, with the emphasis often being on HA or CaK, but they have a beauty and aesthetic all of their own and are definitely a well deserved third leg.

A 430 nm filter helps bring out the faculae and on a good seeing day really boosts the resolving power of any scope because of the shorter wavelength compared with a continuum filter @540nm.

You’re all very kind.
I’d never heard of the 430nm filter, thank you for mentioning it and explaining more. I’ll go and read about it.

That makes both of us. I have a 430nm filter and rarely use it. But wintertime seeing is rarely good enough to benefit from it here.

Good work Nic !
The last day or two showed amazing clarity of the sky, not sure if the seeing was perfect as I did not check the seeing indexes on meteoblue.

I was wondering about the filters you use, maybe it is too much ? Not sure if uv-ir filter is needed.

Christian Viladrich says the Oiii filter (narrowband) gives the best chance of revealing the granulations. He posted that comment on one of the recent posts. Also if you see his book, Solar Astronomy, he mentions the Oiii filter many times in the book.

Just the cost of the Oiii filter is a consideration though !
If only we can borrow the use of this filter for an inexpensive amount, for when you can image ! That would be great.

Thank you all very much indeed: I’m thrilled to bits to achieve SPOD!

James yes it’s a Skywatcher Evostar 80

Thanks Magnus I’d read that a combination of uv/ir and solar continuum filters worked well in a Herschel wedge and seen photographic comparisons so went for that before I bought the Solar Astronomy book! In this one post there’s a further 2 filter suggestions… however do we keep up 🤯😂
It’s great fun getting to ‘know’ you all,
Cheers,

Magnus,
It’s an OIII filter like used for nebulae, right? Screws into an eyepiece? I read somewhere in the past they could be used with satisfactory results. I hear TIO filters are good too.
