March Solar Challenge
Let's look for Calcium K / H prominences this month, and if possible take an image of the same proms in Hydrogen alpha too. It would be nice to have a collection of comparison images to see what differences we can see between the two lights.
Also include any tips on imaging the CaK/H proms to help others too

Phooey....I can't do CaK :-( . Maybe I can find sources online. KSO's CaK images doesn't show proms. :-I

Re: March Solar Challenge
Hi:
Got some FD´s on the 6th of March of this year, so I am loading a CaK FD, taken with the 102mm f/9 Meade refractor, fitted with a CaK modification made from my old CaK PST, and also an Ha FD taken with the Solarmax 90-DS-BF30.
I recorded with the same camera SKYnyx 2-2 and each FD was made with a prominence one and a "surface" one, later composed in one set with PS.
Then used the AS!3 to align and stack 25% of 600 frames on each recording, and then used Registax6 for wavelets and to get a semifinal frame to compose with the other one.
Hope it helps.
Regards,
Eric.

Re: March Solar Challenge
Thanks Eric, there are significant differences in shape between the two lights with all of the prominences. About how far apart in time were these taken? If very close, it would be interesting to overlay these two images with a different colour and compare.

Re: March Solar Challenge
Yeah. It takes a really good ultra narrowband CaK filter or SHG to show them. DayStar’s CaH Quark will show them too.

Re: March Solar Challenge
Alexandra:
There is a 3 hour difference in the Ha image and the CaK image, because I first record with the Solarmax in Ha, then I just change the camera as it is to the 102mm f28 Ha HR recording and lastly I do the Cak recording with the 102mm f/9 Meade refractor, because I have to change the extenders and filters of the camera to do it.
What I will try, is to take the CaK recordings just after the Solarmax Ha ones and lastly the HR setup.
I don´t know how to make the overlay you mention.
Best regards,
Eric.

Terry and James:
I do not remember the optical tests I made, so to check all my small refractors correction to the CaK frequency, but remember that the Meade won, so I used it with the PST CaK modification I made.
Good day.
Eric.

Re: March Solar Challenge
Here is a mediocre go at combining Eric's images with the blue showing CaK and red showing where some HA was but no CaK. If the prom is blue then HA and CaK overlapped. This might be interesting with closeups done close together. I simply layered the HA over the CaK after colorizing them and removing the HA disk and then combined as difference.

Re: March Solar Challenge
These are really great Mark!! do know the time difference between the two pairs?
Like Eric, I found that the time difference is very long before I could swap out the filters. I have also found that my Lunt wedge vertical flips the image so I imaged some proms at the top of the Sun in CaK and the bottom on the H-alpha (small scream).
