Lunt LS40 - it's here!

Post by EricF »

Shipped on Monday, arrived on Thursday, just in time for rain. Comes with a spare thumb screw, and Allen wrenches for the solar finder.

Installed on a GP mount this morning, there's supposed to be some breaks in the cloud cover.

I tried a few Plossl's and then an 18m Radian. The Radian is much better. The view is much brighter than the PST I used in the summer. Can see prominences immediately. Maybe 3/4 to 1 turn on the etalon adjustment, and the surface is showing detail. Can see about half the details on the NSO images.

Comments:
The solar finder was not aligned. Solved that in about 15 seconds.
Focuser is great, but could use a tension/friction adjustment. Definitely better than a helical focuser or the PST focuser.
The 1.25" tube on the front of the blocking filter could be longer. But it's connected by T-thread, so just use an T-extension.
Dovetail should be placed further back on the tube. The OTA is back heavy.

After looking at the sun for over an hour, I tried the iPhone. Exposure control is not great, so I can only get prominences. I'll work on that later. For now, I'll keep staring at the sun.

Thanks guys. Yes, it's risky buying new telescopes out here on the 'wet' coast. (in Canada, Bill).
