Much improved Hα results from RC8

Post by GreatAttractor »

On Saturday I had the first session of the new season, and the best seeing so far for the RC8/Lunt 50 setup. I can now reliably say that there are no more thermal issues - I imagine they would have an impact in the first few minutes of pointing the telescope at the Sun, but instead I got 45 minutes of good-quality material. I was also using my newer laptop and the new external 2 TB SSD which can sustain writes at several hundred MB/s indefinitely. I took 10-second videos at 226-280 fps (using my new Blackfly S/IMX273) and stacked 15% in AS!3 (post-processing in ImPPG). In total, I ended up with some 1.2 TB of data.

Today the seeing was worse, but I pointed the RC8 at the new emerging sunspot anyway and caught some limb activity (20-second intervals, 0:35 h total):

Nice results there. It’s such a challenge with these larger scopes.
