Lunt LS40 and iPhone

Post by EricF »

First good clean sky after a few days of rain.

Lunt LS40, B1200, 15mm Plossl, iPhone held up to the eyepiece. Crop, flip, rotate, shadows and hilights adjusted in Affinity.

The stripes (\) seem to be from the camera sensor. I haven't modified the colours - the surface detail is bleeding through on the green and blue channels. Makes an interesting colour scheme.

Certainly the view through the eyepiece is better (addictive).

Eric F,
I have used the iPhone a fair amount for solar imaging as well. It can do surprisingly well, as you certainly have demonstrated here. I like seeing people try something different like this. Most people here use monochrome video cameras for imaging the Sun for good reason, they are the best, but that being said, good results can be obtained with effort and patience using a smartphone camera, point and shoot digicam, mirrorless camera or a DSLR. Use what you have to most effect. And with me the iPhone is always at hand!!

And then there are those like Marios. He sketches better than some people can image!!

Makes an interesting colour scheme.
Hi Eric,

Well, about the colour you more or less hit the real colour of H-alpha.

Eric Roel, a member of this forum too, did photograph many many years ago a H-alpha light generator and look at the outcome. I do not know what sort of camera he used.

Thanks folks. The scope is definitely what I hoped for. :D

The iPhone is very handy. If there was an app called iRegistax, that would be even more fun!

That special colour from a hydrogen tube - I guess a mix of h-alpha and h-beta? Whatever it is, that's what I remember from the eclipse in 2017. Love that colour.

Eric.

NIce result, indeed! Could you post the image without adjusting shadows and highlights? Just to see how it looks like looking at the eyepiece...
Best, Daniele

Daniele,

Here's a resized version - straight from the phone, no processing, but reduced in dimension to save space. You can see glare from where I didn't completely cover the iPhone. This is with an 18mm Radian eyepiece.

And here's a crop of the original to the same dimensions as the final image (no resize). Just a crop, no processing.

The view through the eyepiece with an eyeball is very similar to the GONG images... but very red!

Eric.
