High camera temperatures
Hello,
what kind of camera temperatures do you get during imaging with larger apertures?
My setup atm is a 150mm f/8 ac, a 160mm d-erf + Baader t2 BBHS mirror diagonal and Quark Chromosphere. With this setup im getting relatively high temperatures on my zwo asi 174mm (noncooled), namely up to 53°C. So the camera sometimes just looses connection with the imaging software.
I have the sensation that something is off with my setup.
Any ideas?
Could it be that the D-erf is mounted in the wrong direction (Arrow is pointing towards the sun)? Or the arrow is wrong?
image quality is not much affected, though lower temperatures are always welcome because of noise.

i forgot to tell the ambient air temperatures, they were around 17°C today, but the camera temperature went relatively quick back to 53°C after a short manual break (camera disconnected from the usb 3 port)

Hello Dennis,
If you put your hand at the exit of the Quark, you will feel no heat. However, the Quark is thermo-regulated. It don't know what is the target temperature for your Quark. This might explain (or not) why your camera is warm.
Have you tested taking the camera away from the telescope and checked its temperature ?

Hello Christian,
that is a good tip. The Quark was warm as well when i disassembled all. The led was green all the time, so i guess it was working normal, also pictures seemed to be not affected. So i have to think of a cooling solution for the camera since i dont want to use plastic adapters for to adapt it to the Quark.

Hi,
i dont have equipment to measure it, but doesnt feel "hot", just warm, maybe 35-40°C.
But i think its just the camera itself that gets too warm with this application.
Im looking now for a peltier cooling solution, or a used cooled version of the camera.

Strange. 45°C is rather high for indoor operation. I think Paul/Banjo has an ASI74. Hi Dennis,
As you can see you have there also already a delta temperature against ambient of about 18-23°C and this heat is on the outside of the QUARK as well as it will be on the thread or the nosepiece adapter.... but doesnt feel "hot", just warm, maybe 35-40°C.
You have to take into account that the QUARK is attached to the camera via metallic conection. So the temperature of the QUARK also helps to increase the camera temperature.
Connect the camera and do not activate taking images and wait maybe an hour and measure the temperature of the camera by switching it on and read the temperature the software is telling you. In this way you can see how much does the QUARK heat up you camera and from there you can calculate the temperature delta when the camera is active.
Just an idea ...
There are Multimeters on the market with temperature probes which you could tape onto the surface of the QUARK ¿?

i think the camera-chip-temperatures should be fine with 53°C on a warmer day with 20°C ambient air temp.
In the end i think it was a problem with firecapture being interrupted by workmeetings and other workstuff on the computer.. appearently it has some stability problems there.
So far recording seem to work when i dont have other stuff running in the background.

BTW, you can easily install a passive heatsink on the camera. It will reduce the temperature of the camera body by 5 to 10°C.

wow.. didnt know it has that effect. Thanks for the tipp. I was wondering how the chip can be efficiently cooled when there is no direct contact of the metal-housing with the chip. But seems to work then. And looking at the Body of the ASI 174MM it is even quite easy to adapt one on it as it has already a nice threaded hole for a 1/4"-20 screw = standard photographic tripod screw.

I made this assembly which allows to gain 4 to 5°, the most effective would be to insert a Peltier module to gain a few degrees.
The ASI 174 rises very high in temperature even when not connected to an assembly, this is the big problem.
