AstroSolar 3.8 + EP ND 1.8

Post by vineyard »

Hello,

If I were to put Baader AstroSolar 3.8 film in front of my little 125 Mak, but then also put an ND 1.8 filter on the EP would that be safe for visual?

Its a Meade ETX125 - ie, has a flip mirror at the back, so I could run it straight through for imaging with just 3.8, and then if I flip the mirror, it goes in to the EP which has the additional 1.8 (& maybe also solar continuum filter) threaded on it.

Is that a daft idea?

Cheers,

Vin

Is there risk involved? I don't know what the curve is like for transmission & these different ND settings. If it's exponential then it's conceivable that effectively doublestacking 3.8 & 1.8 still comes out well below 5 (which is deemed safe for visual) or perhaps it comes out too dark? Has anyone ever tried this? (Sorry I'm an inveterate tinkerer :) )

could work in theory.. but i would change front filters instead to switch. and even then i would be really paranoid about having the correct filter installed when looking through.
