Live floating sunspots! Penumbra ballet in 83 min animation of AR12293-4 in WL! 20 April 2022

Post by H-Alpha »

Hi all,

It's been a long time that I wished make this animation!
The seeing was medium good in the begging, but deteriorated rapidly. Nevertheless, with such beautiful ARs and sunspots I wanted to try a long animation in WL to see the sunspot penumbras moving and floating.

The seeing stopped me at 83 min (I discarded the last 7 captures), but I am still very glad that live and moving sunspots are visible!
The animation is at the end of the post... Do not stop at the photos. ;-)

First I made a H-alpha of the area. I was tempted to make an animation on this, but at the end I said I should try the WL, although I did not have the very good seeing I needed.

Then the same area in the Blue wing of H-alpha

Then the first capture in WL, while the seeing was acceptable

And finally...
The long animation in WL with the ballet of penumbra and two small spot areas floating on the photosphere!

Hope you will like it. I liked it a lot and I am happy to share the animation and my emotion about it! ;-)

Now I just hope to better seeing in the next few days to improve this kind of work on the WL.

Best wishes,
Alexandros

Alexandros,
All are great but the animation really brings the AR12993-94 area to life! It's incredible! The motion in the penumbrae of the big spots is superbly captured and just look at the seething granulation! Animations like this shows what no still image can and certainly goes huge lengths beyond my visual observations. This certainly is professional-grade!!

Two thumbs and two toes up on this one!!!

James

Super animation and stills, Alexandros ! Good idea doing a WL animation with so much action on the surface.

Thanks a lot for your kind comments Gordon, Mark, James, Arne, Franco! :-)
I am glad you liked it.
WL animations are not common, perhaps because we need long animations to see some movement. I like WL so much. ;-)

Best wishes,
Alexandros

Hi

Are the bright dots on the inside of the sunspot dark bits Ellerman bombs. I saw bright spot on the inside of the thin claw.

Cheers. Andrew.

Andrew, are you referring to the Blue wing of H-alpha photo or to the animation? I suppose you refer to the blue wing (or the H-alpha), because as far as I know the Ellerman bombs are not visible in WL, although I may be wrong. Which sunspot you refer to?

Best wishes,
Alexandros

I’ve never heard of EBs being visible in white light. Even with solar flares only really powerful ones can be seen in continuum.
