PST + Quantum DS test -UPDATE

Post by torsinadoc »

I finally have the adapters to start to test a modular DS set up. I want a modular DS system to use with my 150/1200 refractor. The conditions were TERRIBLE. We had 30 MPH gusts and constant 5-8mph. It was very cloudy and took about 80 minutes to capture a few video files. The wind was so bad that I set up in my garage and imaged over my driveway which destroyed seeing. It was very hard to tune the PST and quantum with all the clouds. I will need to work on this when conditions are better. I had to take flats when I added the PST

Processed in IMPPG

I used my 102/F11 achromat (my favorite all around solar scope)

I must say that it seems to me that though the contrast might be a little soft for my taste, I’d be very happy with the results you got! You are on to a good thing here!

Thanks for comment. I agree with the contrast. It was flat. I only applied sharpening. Below I added more contrast with curves and histogram adjustment in PS.

Beautiful results, Alan! The double stack seems to work well.

While the new, more contrasty version of your image clearly looks attractive, more dramatic than the original version, I also like the first version, because adding more contrast often means that inner structure of the sunspots, i.e. umbral dots etc., is no longer visible, as Alexandra rightly uses to point out.

Could you tell me what exposure values and gain you used? I am asking because I also have a QuantumSE (behind a TZ3) and I also would like to double stack, but my first attempts with a PST etalon were not successful. I had to raise exposure times and/or gain too much for good images.

Regards,

Frank

Im going on memory (I deleted the files). I believe that the Basler was at 15ms and gain around 21 (Genika astro) and the Apollo was 10.5 ms and gain around 380. Typically the Basler is 10 ms and gain 15-20 and Apollo has a gain around 140-200. These are similar settings to the Lunt+Daystar combo.

Thanks, Alan! Unfortunately that is what I found, too. For full disks an medium resolution imaging 10-15ms exposure time is fine, but for high res it's too long, at least for the kind of seeing I have.

This setup looks to hold a lot of promise, and the re-processed image looks great :bow

Hello,
15 ms is indeed quite long. If you use the Basler 1920-155 and Genika, you can increase the gain to 18 000 with no problem. You will have shorter exposures. Then you need to stack at least 300 frames.

These were taken with the Apollo M Max. The PST is very finicky when tuning. It is (or I am) inconsistent.

Great images. Looks like you’ve got a winning setup there. Tweaking and refining will produce superb images when you master your kit under ideal seeing, and optimise processing. Very nice 👌.
