Solarchat is changing to a new hosting service in May

Post by solarchat »

With over 350,000+ posts, 50,000+ attachments totaling over 42GB in 30,000+ topics spanning over a decade, we have grown way too large for Web.Com/Network Solutions hosting services.
We had to change over to google search and delete our search index just to stay running with our current limit of a 1GB database size.
thanks to the sponsorships we received this year, I can finally afford to buy a new hosting package on a real web hosting service that can handle our volume.
I have contracted with the consultant and with our new host dreamhost.com to do a switchover to their services sometime in May.
i’m also hoping this will fix our silly email problems where network solutions constantly rejects or never sends emails because we are tagged as a junk mail distributor due to our volume.
supposedly it will be a seamless transfer… Lol.
I’m guessing we will lose some posts and some attachments but that the vast majority of things will remain free to users, unchanged and as-is here on the wonderful Solarchat forum.
There will probably be up to a two day outage of the forum while the domains and data are transferred over which I will broadcast well ahead of time so you will be expecting it.
I will be very excited to have a more responsive hosting service with vastly improved features.
More updates on this later as the switchover approaches.

This is awesome Steven. Most of the data used here is done in images since this is foremost an imaging forum, I think. I had thought about suggesting splitting off Sunlit Earth into a separate forum and make SolarChat a more hardcore solar observers/imagers forum to allot data to be only used here for dedicated solar imaging and observations. But this change would make that totally unnecessary and out of thought. I am slowly getting out of the financial rut I have been in and hopefully can soon start contributing via a donation to CBSAP in the near future.

Thanks for all of your hard work here Stephen. It's appreciated. This is the best forum I have ever been on. Period!

DEAR STEPHEN,
MANY THANKS FOR ALL YOUR EFFORTS IN RUNNING CBSAP/S0LARCHAT.

EVEN THOUGH I MAY NO-LONGER BE ABLE TO TAKE AN ACTIVE PART (AS PREVIOUS), I CERTAINLY TRUST THAT SC WILL
CONTINUE "AS-IS" FOR MANY MORE DECADES IN THE FUTURE.

I AM NOW IN-BETWEEN THE THIRD AND PROBABLY FINAL STAY IN HOSPITAL (THEY NEED THE BED-SPACE MORE THAN ME) !! ,
THIS MIGHT BE MY LAST POST (THANKS TO COVID...)

BEST WISHES
TERRY
