Solar flare animations

Post by Alun_H »

Managed to get to image a flare produced around sunspot AR 3007 and an violent X-flare produced from AR 3006 despite the thin cloud once again hampering the view. Using my PST modified 90/900 achromat and QHY5III 178M (using ROI) I aimed at 3007 first and noticed a brightening in the region
so recorded a sequence of fifteen 2000 frame SER files sixty seconds apart between 13:09 and 13:26 UT. Clouds thickened for a while and in the odd breaks I came across what turned out to be an X-class flare around AR 3006 and because of the cloud I could only get seven SER's roughly 2-3 minutes apart between 13:49 and 13:58 UT and due to rushing to get the data image quality isn't great but does show the severity of the solar flare.

Came out well ALun! Have you tried ImPPG to align the frames for the animation?

Hi Mark,Alexandra
Thank you both :) I downloaded IMPPG a while back and haven't really used it so didn't realise it did alignment routine. I did have a go at aligning earlier today with it and it succeeded on the AR 3007 animation but failed miserably on the second set of images, but due to quality of the images I doubt there was anything the program could lock onto to align, certainly a lot easier and quicker than using Maxim to manually align though so again thank you for the heads up Mark. In regards posting the stills I'll go through them and convert to .jpeg files and post a couple or so of each set later as the images are sat on my desktop PC in the obsy. ;)

Thank you Terry :)

Here are a few of the stills,as I stated image quality isn't that good due to cloud passing through, especially on the AR 3006 X flare set.

Alun,
WoW, The X-flare is like a super-thermonuclear fireball!! Nice capture sequence!

I did a color sequence of your images to simulate a more visual-like view. I hope you don't mind. They are nice images documenting the flare. I also saved the GONG sequence from my session. I barely missed the flare and caught it dwindling just afterwards.

James

Hi James,

Thank you and you are more than welcome to play with the images :D

In all the time I have been doing solar this is the brightest flare I have ever witnessed, just thankful that the clouds gave way at the right time.
