Total Lunar eclipse May 15-16-2022

Post by DeepSolar64 »

I know this isn't about the sun itself but is solar related. Sunday night North Amerca had a nice total lunar eclipse which started in the late evening just after sunset and ended well after midnight. I have sketched lunar eclipses in the past and have taken afocal images of them through the eyepiece using point and shoot digicams with satisfactory results. Sunday night I decided to set up two scopes, my Astro-Tech AT72EDII which will be using my ZWO ASI178MM to view it through the monitor and to image it. The second scope is my 40 year old Traq 60mm F12 achromat which I will use visually with it's old Sears 20mm Keller .0965 eyepiece which gives 35x. I also took some afocal iPhone images using it as well.

The moon was bright and easy even at mid eclipse and was not a deep red but a lighter blend of yellowish-pinkish red. Clouds hit me at mid eclipse and I only saw the early and end of the total phase but at least I did get to see totality.

Anyway Here are the resulting images.

James

Thanks Mark. It was a lot of fun. It's the first using a videocam and a monitor for me. I had the two B's too. Binoculars and Beer! I just needed Beethoven for three!

The challenge was getting the colors right or at least close on the ASI178MM images. They are monochrome! Fortunately I got the iPhone image through the 60mm Traq which was of course a color image which gave me something to go by when adding the color to the monochrome images and the iPhone's colors where very close to how the eye saw the moon through the scope and the 10x50 binoculars. I edited the first image in GIMP and then captured the RGB curves to go by when editing subsequent images. The monochrome images do capture the shades of the eclipse just not in color. While I certainly don't hold them equal to what a color camera would do I still ended up satisfied with the images.

Excellent eclipse pics James :bow

I had a bit of view of the early partial stages, but cloud cover increased as it went along and did not stay up with the need to be into work early on Monday morning.

Thanks and you are welcome Brian. Hopefully my eclipse images will suffice since you did not get to see totality.
