May 21 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

I have been gone almost all day but I did have time to do a visual solar session this morning and to record it. Now late I finally get a chance to post it.

My session time was from 13:43 until 14:30 UTC. The skies were mostly clear and the seeing above average. The temperature was 79F ( 26.1C) Breezy. By 16:00 UTC thunderstorms were building and the temperature had passed 82F.

Coronado SolarMax II 60. SS & DS. 16x, 25x, 33x and 50x ( Ha )
I can see ten active regions in the Ha chromosphere today. Five in the northern hemisphere, all five numbered and Five in the southern hemisphere with four of those numbered systems.

The NE quadrant shows a plage that is associated with AR13019. A filament lies to it's north. AR13017 lies well to it's west on the CLM and shows scattered plage and a couple of filaments. One long and bent in the middle. Very thin. NW is it lies AR13014 with easily seen spots and scattered plage. It looks like some C class flaring may be taking place. A brighter area is seen below the westernmost spots. AR13015 below AR13014 is seen as fainter plage. The whole AR13017-14-15 complex is an interacting one and looks like one big massive disturbance visually. It's effect on the surrounding chromosphere can be observed. Just to the west, easily in the NW quadrant lies the plage of AR13011.

Due south of AR13011 in the SW quadrant lies two visible plages. The southernmost one is the dim disturbance of AR13013. NW of AR13013 lies the brighter plage of AR13010. Two nice filaments lie SE & SSE of AR13010 and SW of AR13016-18. AR13016 in the SE quadrant is visible as a plage with three small filaments. AR13018 is a smaller fainter plage NW of AR13016. An unnumbered plage lies a bit inward of the SE limb with three embedded filaments visible.

Four bright prominences lie on the SE limb. Three more somewhat dimmer ones lie on the NE limb. A filament is seen north of them inward of the limb but I cannot see any connection to them. The NW limb shows a prom with a couple of plasma puffs at the top and a bright one is seen low on the SW limb.

The mottles are easily seen disc wide today.

Eleven areas can be seen on the White Light photosphere this morning. Six in the northern hemisphere, Five numbered and Five in the southern hemisphere, four numbered.

AR13019 is visible in the NE quadrant as a bent asterism of pores against faint faculae. Well west of it at the Central Longitudinal Meridian lies the multi-pored structure of AR13017 oriented NE-SW, two areas somewhat separated. NW of it lies the magnificent AR13014. It's beautiful at 50x and above showing finer detail at 62.5x and 100x. Many umbrae, umbralets, pores and mottled penumbrae all in a semi-connected mass. It's beautiful! The granulation of the photosphere is easily visible around the system but the scope lacks the ability to resolve the individual granules and the filter does not quite have the contrast the wedge does to aid in showing them visually. Still it's a gorgeous view though. SSW of it lies a couple of small spots/pores associated with AR13015. Well west to WSW of AR13014 lies 5 small spots/pores associated with AR13011. A small patch of faculae is glimpsed very near the NW limb.

A low contrast patch of faculae is seen in the SW quadrant nearing the limb. It's what remains of AR13013. I see no spot or pore here. AR13010 lies NE of AR13013 and shows a dominant larger dark pore amid a few smaller pores. No faculae can be seen here. Well east across the CLM in the SE quadrant two spots and a pore are seen with the larger spot being west of the smaller spot. These belong to AR13016. The larger spot shows some detail within it. The eastern spot is elongated and may be a line of very tiny unresolved pores. AR13018 to the NW is entirely invisible. An unnumbered plage is seen in the SE quadrant. Just SE of it lies a new but small spot just inside the limb.

I hope everyone here is having a nice weekend.

James

Thanks for the report James, the sun wasn't out for much for me on Saturday, I did manage to get a quick disk though.
