UK Magnetometer back in service- June 5th 2022

Post by Carbon60 »

My magnetometer has been out of action for a few weeks during a major build project at home. I've recently been able to set it up again (re-laying the data cable) and after a few days of letting everything settle down (temperature equilibration), I was able to capture some data yesterday and compare with a reference station operated as part of the INTERMAGNET network (Chambon la Foret, close to Paris, France). As you'll see, the correlation is excellent (given the distance between stations and geomagnetic variability with geography), so I'm really pleased that this seems to be up and running again and producing reliable results. My main concern was all the steel piling that went into the foundations (11 piles at an average of 5.5 metres each)

I'll be re-routing the cable once further work is completed at home and there may be periods of interruption with other things going on (such as scaffolding), but I'm just glad the steelwork hasn't ruined my magnetic observatory.

Interesting, Mark: do you have a layout of the instrument?
