14.06.22 AR3032 in H-alpha (closeups)

Post by Dennis »

Hi,
the next interesting sites are coming around and i had a close look to the area of AR3032, after improving collimation of the C9 further last night.
This time i used a 3x TV barlow instead of a 2x for more precision with the collimation.

Sadly after finishing the todays solar imaging session i realized that the camera wasnt seated properly inside the 2" Quark adapter. So i hope to fix most abberations by improving this next time.

The Scope was at ~F36 with the Daystar reducer and at ~F45 without it.

Thanks for looking.

V nice. Is the visual something similar to that? (Have always wondered). Btw I see you use a MiniTower too - great to see it takes a C9 without a sweat. That's a nice idea about the foil to protect the mount - I've just copied your approach here :)

Thx, i dont know, i havend tried yet. But i also dont have high hopes there since i see this apertures more in the realm of imaging only.
Its the alt az pro, works fine with the C9 for solar system imaging and visual.
Yes, i made that little hat because the mount got really hot up there without it : )

Wow!! can you give me a little more detail on how you are collimating? I see nothing at all like these images with my C11 ;)

Excellent results, Dennis!

I particularly liked the 3rd image (0456_8_.png).

Do you find it easy to achieve good collimation using MetaGuide?

Best regards,
Arne

Sure, first i make sure i am as close as possible to collimation by centering the defocused starpattern (donut). The donut has to be in the center of the field of view, and once it moves because i turn a collimationscrew i center it back to the middle. This first procedure is usually not necessary for me after i did it one time.

Then i use Metaguide (free tool with manual on its website) and do the finetuning. I center a bright star thats relatively high in the sky and bring it to focus with the help of a focusing mask (Firecapture). Then i switch to Metaguide to see how well it is collimated (red dot helper). Once im fine i do the same with higher maginification, in my case a 3x barlow with the apollo max. Same procedure, small turns and after each turn center the star to the middle.

It takes a while to get used to the software and its settings. After that, its a breeze to do the routine.

"I see nothing at all like these images with my C11 ;)"

Im still learning to image with the C9, but i think its rather about imaging/processing techniques combined with decent seeing then the best collimation. The TZ4 was the partypooper last time you showed C11 images i think.
Im still experimenting with imaging times and fps, i sense a lot of potential here.

Thank you Arne.
I would lie if i said it was easy the first time with MetaGuide. Now that im used to it it is actually a very fast routine that i do once every 3 months or so to check collimation. Often it is still spot on.

regards
Dennis

Nice results Dennis!

Your observing location on that balcony seems a lot more seeing friendly than mine, and I admire your collimation prior. Personally, I can't be fussed with all the collimation involved (not just for solar!) to make them perform and then the variability with mirror flop etc. Give me a frac any day! :D

Thanks Mark.
dont worry, i did this only to get it right because i had it new.. now it will stay like that for quite some time.
Im also a fan of refractors, but not of a 235mm one : )

The joys of collimation :) Collimated my C9.25 last week as well (just for nighttime visual use though); it does get easier the more you do it indeed.

You seem to have everything set up perfectly though. Very nice results!

Thank you all for your nice comments.
This device is a lot of fun and thermally not as hard to handle as i thought. Quite the opposite.
Imaging and processing a bit different though.
