Tuesday Sunshine 14th June

Post by marktownley »

Tuesday was nice and sunny with blue skies and decent transparency with temperatures in the low to mid 20's I decided to get home early from work with a view of a bit of observing / imaging, seeing was coming in on meteoblue at >2" so I decided to play safe and come away with treasure rather than trash. A bit of 'exploring' here with some different setups, firstly the full disk in Ha, double stacked 50mm on the 60/360 scope with a 2x cemax and the 183mm camera using 2x2 binning to hone in on the sampling rate.

I like 2x2 binning here (compared to not) - exposure time with the DS shortens to 3ms. Files take up less disk space and take less time to process. I'm certainly going to explore more!

Next up the CaK full disk, this time using the ED80 stopped down to 40mm to give a f15 light cone through the filter. For the homebrew filter this f15 seems to give best results (more stop down masks to be made on the laser cutter I think for other scopes)!

I'm hoping you like these and also hoping I get clear skies before work on thursday for another quick view!

Hi Mark

Really nice images, always love your Cak images :bow2 :bow2

I have been stuffed with interviews and training, will, likely get out on the 16th weather forecast is good and the active areas look great, seems to be a little quite following these when they have passed

Looking good, Mark.

Binning the ASI183 in that setup does seem to give very pleasing results.

Very nice FDs, Mark. Sometimes it’s best to play it safe when the conditions are marginal. Opportunities are too few to waste.

Binning without losing the available resolution is definitely worthwhile and given the shorter exposure times it can only help when the seeing is borderline.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, it's cloudy here too ALexandra, at least when I can observe :/

Here are the 'closeups' I promised. I say this 'in a fashion' as the disks are already critically sampled so by switching to the 290mm camera and altering the barlow power just offers a different presentation. I could probably crop down from the disks and things wouldn't be much different...

I've been hoping to observe a bit more this week but the weather has been pants at the wrong times. I want to explore the 183mm with 2x2 binning a little more, next full disks I may try recording in 16 bit and see how this comes out (apart from longer processing time than 8bit), i'm wondering if 16 bit (well 12bit really!) will get me any more with the increased well depth the binning offer compared to non binned. I do like a tinker! Anyway, unless it is clear first thing in the morning before work I won't be imaging till next week with rain forecast for the weekend.

Hope your weekend offers better and hope you like these shots!

Mark

Very nice Mark and I always like your shots!

Good luck on a better solar weekend.

James

P.S. What are the little white dots in the plage in the CaK images? Do EBs ever get picked up in CaK or CaH images?

Thanks James, I think it is micro flaring, either way it is common on the active sun.

I can barely believe my eyes, these are SUNsational!
I've just commented to Arne, and the same goes to you with this set, that I was telling my friend about your images and how all the detail stays when you zoom in. What factors help this? Camera? Scope? SER bit number? Or straightforward superhero special power?

Thanks Nic, the only think i'm doing here is making sure the sampling is correct - wavelength, focal length, pixel size that's all :)
