Calcium Sun June 15, 2022

Post by ffellah »

Hello all: a very quick 15 minute session this morning before going to work to capture the (9 !) active regions, now that activity is ramping up again. Evostar 72mm ED scope stopped to 35mm, Daystar CaH filter, PG 814 camera.

That's a gorgeous CaH disc Franco! You have proven that CaH is a very viable alternative to CaK.

Two thumbs up!!

A very clean and beautiful image Franco, there is a lot of plage about. I wonder if this set of three in the north we have seen before. I need to look back on spaceweather 3-4 weeks.

Hi Franco, what's your impression of CaH vs CaK?

Is your photo rotated slightly counter-clockwise on purpose?

Very nice the sun face in Ca-H !

Question: have you ever observed the sun _visually_ with DayStar CaH Quark?
If yes, how easy or difficult all these active areas can be seen?

That is a good question. It’s still probably quite low in contrast visually. I would like to try it.

Hello all: thank you all for the very kind words and sorry for the late response. @thesmiths: I should have used the SDO image to correctly orient my image but it was a very quick session in the morning before work and the SDO image was taken actually in the evening before posting. Maybe next time. CaH vs CaK: I never tried CaK but I greatly admire all images from members of this forum. In his book Christian says there is no practical difference in results between CaH and CaK images. So far, I am satisfied with the quality of full disk images coming out of the Quark, as it is a relatively inexpensive Calcium filter. On high magnification/resolution I have not achieved yet my best results, probably because of seeing and processing technique, but will continue to try hard, weather permitting. I find the Quark CaH very easy to use and I think it represents great value. BTW, congratulations on the SPOD ! @Valery: initially, back in November when I received the filter I observed with it. The first time I was able to see the sunspots but the view was definitely very dark and I had to look for the features. Second time I could not see anything, maybe because of smaller features. So observing is possible but challenging. I had cataract surgery few years ago and my eyesight is good now, so that helps. I will try observing again in the future and will post results.

When I look at the K and H lines through a spectrometer, I can see that the slightly longer wavelength (H) is considerably brighter, at least on a camera sensor. That may not make enough difference visually though. It can lead to better shutter-speed/gain settings so for the same bandwidth, H ought to give slightly better imaging results, all else being equal.

Lovely. CaK images always make me think of a Tarkovsky science fiction movie with a completely oceanic planet and just a few archipelagos of islands dotted in the vastness.
