16.6.22 Todays Sun, figuring out seeing limits + Ellerman closeup

Post by Dennis »

Hi,
todays seeing was good and i am slowly getting used to h-alpha imaging with high focal lengths. Using the C9 turns out to be a lot of fun and even less hassle then with the long 150mm f/8 achro. I tried to image without the focal reducer @~f45 and even with a 1.3x glaspathcorr in front the Quark, which resulted in ~f58. I guess this is the limit for now, glad to know it (Guess i need more aperture? Nah.. just kidding : ))

During the session also i witnessed a ellerman explosion with the f58 focal length, will make later a animation from it. For now only a picture of it (last one).
With the proms i still have to work on my editing + dust specs of the camera were annoying.

Enjoy the day.
Dennis

(Edit: here the link to the animation of what i think is a ellerman blast: https://gifyu.com/image/SH6c3)

Wow, great shots there! F58 looks like pretty high value. Did you use camera with big pixel?

Impressive resolution. I have always the feeling the with solar planetary work it pays to try to use the widest aperture one can afford or manage. Do you coat the c9 with a reflector/insulator. I wat considering to use my c9 for white light with a full.aperture astrosolar , but I'm afraid of thermal isdues

Thanks, yes it has 9μm pixels.

I didnt go for a C11 because nighttime seeing wouldnt be up for it here in the city. But surprisingly daytime seeing seems to be better.
Nevertheless around 10kg is a sweetspot for me.. more and i would need a bigger mount, which is too much hassle for me.
No coating / insulating. I thought i would have to do it.. but it behaves very good with the Baader mods like white finish of the outer tube and the sun shields in front and on the secondary. Almost as good as my 150mm achro.

Nice to know, I will order a 235 mm astrosolar and try some hires with the c9. The white frame from baader helps to reject some heat when pointing straight at the sun I think

Looks like you're having fun with the new scope Dennis! I'd personally lose the glass path corrector infront of the Quark and get better sampling, you'll get better results.

Makes sense, Mark. It will look better without, but had to see what happens if i use it : )

Superb!! love the animation :movie looks more like a flare to me rather than an Ellerman bomb as it is quite large, nearly the same size as the spot itself.

Thx, im not sure what they are, but ive seen this several times now in this size and close to sunspots. It looks spherical and is extremely bright, visible on band in h alpha.

Beautiful results Dennis!

Is this using a regular C9.25" or Edge version?

Best regards,
Arne

Thanks Arne,
its a regular C9.25 (with D-ERF modded corrector plate)
