6/14 and 6/19 sketch in continuum and Ha updated with 6-25
Our weather has been unbearably hot. I am not able to view/image in the AM because of work. By the late afternoon the conditions are difficult. The last few days the heat index has been > 100F. This is atypical for my area. These are digital sketches. On 6-19 I utilized a grid to overlay the disc which helped with orientation and made it easier to get the spot size closer to what I view in the eye piece. I used an iPad, apple pencil and procreate to sketch. PS to rotate image

Thanks. I am still working on technique but I'm gaining a better understanding of the software

Interesting technique digital sketching. Result looks like a photograph, very nice!

Re: 6/14 and 6/19 sketch in continuum and Ha
Thanks everyone
Hans
It depends on the complexity of the disc. I use layers focusing on scale and anatomy. The entire process from start to end that takes a few minutes for a relatively low activity disc or >30 minutes (viewing and drawing). My Ha drawings take more time. I added noise to my WL image because it adds a little texture to the disc.
I made several master files that I can open and add solar details. It took a while to make the masters so that saved front end time. I also tried several different pencil settings, brushes, etc and when I found ones that I liked I made notes so I can reuse them (I use different pencil/settings for WL umbra than penumbra, etc I turn on a grid At a low magnification I will outline the relative location and scale of each area. I use layers for the umbra, penumbra and faculae. I zoom in at higher magnification and spend time drawing each detail using the outline as border to keep spot scale correct. I no longer use the penumbra, umbra and faculae outlines and only the original low magnification outline. Prior to adding the general outline I was off in scale and disc location for each area. I like layers because I may mess up and it is easier to fix without erasing other structures. Once I have double checked each area and adjusted (add blur or use blending tool) I turn off grid and flatten image. Since I sketch with manual Alt/Az mount I need to rotate and horizontal flip my image (PS).
I am spending time to try and improve my observational skills. I am finding that I am getting better at noticing subtle details in Ha and WL.

Re: 6/14 and 6/19 sketch in continuum and Ha
Thank you very much for your detailled explanation on how to make the sketches!
From making sketches of Deep Sky objects in the past I know that one can see more details when one makes sketches, compared to "just looking".
My drawing skills were not so great however, so I stopped drawing.
Maybe good idea for me to start making sketches again during solar observation to notice more subtle details.
Regards,
Hans

I wouldn't consider my skills all that great. I can barely draw a stick figure but I still enjoy the process and find it rewarding.SolarHans wrote: ↑Sat Jun 25, 2022 10:14 am Thank you very much for your detailled explanation on how to make the sketches!

Re: 6/14 and 6/19 sketch in continuum and Ha updated with 6-25
Today's conditions were finally tolerable. It was in the low 80s with a slight breeze.
Equipment:
Celestron 150/1200 achromat + baader wedge, continuum filter- baader zoom. I should have used my binoviewers but my observing buddy (Franklin the dog) was being "needy".
Transparency was average, seeing was 3-4/5
Image is not rotated or flipped. N-S is 62.1 (from tilting sun) and west is up.

Amazing prominences sketches !

These are awesome!! Sketching, whether by pencil or digital is a superior way to document the Sun by visual observation. Certainly better than the description method I use. I never would have realized that digital sketching could rival sketching with actual pencil and paper.
I don't know how I missed these.

I tried both pencil and digital. I found digital allowed easier storage with my digital images. It is nice to have everything in one place. I would NOT discount your eloquent ability to describe what you see in the eyepiece. I lack that skill.
