ISS Solar Transit 2022.06.22
About 5 days ago, it seemed the ISS would transit over my office building. Obviously, an ideal scenario. Unfortunately, there was probably an orbital adjustment and the center line of the transit moved a 40 minute drive away. Irked about it, I gave up, but this morning I said “Nay! I shall not surrender! I shall capture this!”.
Armed with a 2.5 hour leave of absence from work, I set off and drove to a field to set up. Transit lasted 0.54 seconds at 13:19:46 and it appeared on time, albeit it was not a precise center crossing, despite me setting up 200 feet from the supposed spot of a center transit. Red spot is where I was situated, dotted black line was the supposed center path.
Lessons learned for next attempt:
1. Increase gain to drop capture to say below 3ms to “freeze” the ISS
2. Switch to 8 bit to capture more frames with the ISS transiting
3. Get a camera with a faster frame rate to capture even more frames
4. Ignore critical sampling if necessary and image at a shorter focal length to use different camera (I used the 183MM) and still get full disk
I am quite happy with the result and will be better prepared for future transits. I have to say, my heart was racing and I started the capture run 20 seconds before the transit, watching my laptop monitor like a hawk. I was screaming with excitement as I saw the ISS on my screen and KNEW that I captured it!

I was using 0.449 ms to get clear ISS on solar surface when ISS was real close (521km away from me). I had 3m of focal length. I put the image here so you don't have to look it up. I hope you don't mind. Longer the focal length (bigger image of ISS) the shorter exposure you must have to grab it steady. I hope this will help you in future ISS imaging.

@ Lagonda: great shot! Will keep it in mind re exposure time. I will actually practice at various exposures and gain to find how much I can push gain before noise becomes a serious issue.
