4 hours 45 minutes time-lapse of AR3038 captured in H-Alpha on 24th of June 2022

Post by arnedanielsen »

Dear friends,

Had to toss away about an hours worth of recordings due to some passing clouds in the beginning of the day, but here's a 4 hours 45 minutes time-lapse of AR3038 captured in H-Alpha on 24th of June 2022.

The time-lapse is created from 557 recordings between 11:28UT and 16:13 on June 24th 2022. Each recording was 20 seconds long with a forced framerate of ~50fps (1000 frames) and a 10 seconds delay between each recording. The recordings where made using an ASI ZWO 174MM together with a DayStar Quark Chromosphere through an Explore Scientific 152AR masked down to 140mm f/7. This setup gave a focallength of 4250mm f/30.4 and a sampling of 0.28" per pixel. The telescope was mounted on an SkyWatcher AZ EQ6 Pro in EQ-mode and guided with a Hinode SolarGuider.

The best (sharpest) 100 frames from each recording was stacked in AutoStakkert!3 before they were aligned, sharpened and contrast-stretched in ImPPG. Another tweak of contrast was done in PS before the files were deflickered using GbDeflicker.

The images was then downsized to 80% (to save some bandwith) before creating the time-lapse at 12 fps in PIPP. This effectively compressed the 4 hours 45 minutes of duration down to a mere 46 seconds.

PS Image file is still big (411MB) so please allow some time for it to load.

That is an herculean effort Arne! Amazing how consistent the seeing held for you. Lots of stuff going on in this one particularly with some of the plasma rain that falls around the main prom!

Thank you very much for all your kind comments Warren, Mark, Petrus, Nic and Chris!

I was hoping I might get lucky and catch some flaring action from the region, but it was rather quiet. Still there was some nice activity. I only wish the seeing could have been a bit better. Ohhh.. maybe next time.

Best regards,
Arne

That is a pretty spectacular recording of the chromosphere, Arne. Definitely one of the best I have seen. Congratulations on achieving such an excellent result ! You are very dedicated...

Great, Arne!
tons of work, well adjusted every step, and the result is worth it!
the movie would be already from the category A.D. production presents. :)

Hi Arne,

Excellent. Have you tried to make a mp4 video ? The quality result is the same but the file size is much smaller. Just an idea ...

Thank you very much James, Leo, Rainer and JP!

Rainer: MP4 video would be preferable to animated GIF, but AstroBin doesn't support that yet. I have tried sharing videos on YouTube before, but haven't always been happy with the quality there either.

Arne
