H-alpha and H-beta SHG mosaics

Post by thesmiths »

To make demonstrate our new SHG software (see viewtopic.php?t=36866) we reprocessed some H-alpha and H-beta SHG data from a week ago (see viewtopic.php?t=36757). For various technical reasons, these were difficult to process in full-disk form with the old version of the software. This time, it worked flawlessly. The new automatic cropping feature also made it much easier to assemble mosaics. The 3x3 mosaics have a good amount of detail so are best seen with [right click --> open image in new tab --> left click to magnify].

Really excellent stuff you are doing here Douglas. Does the software run on windows?

Wow! Excellent SHG images. It would be really interesting to see everything in detail….the instrument, how it’s used and how the images are processed. Top drawer results, Douglas. 👏 👏

Yes, the software package we put together (see Solar Software for the GitHub), is setup for Windows. But there are some who are running it on Linux, but I believe they need to make some minor changes. In theory, it should run on Mac also. Since it is Python, it should be platform independent. But the thing about Python, is you need to understand how to set up the environment properly. The README for our software package tries to explain how to do that.

Christian Buil has uploaded an SER files in H-alpha that you can play around with: http://www.astrosurf.com/solex/download/12_08_34.zip. It is a moderate size file, with moderately good resolution and quite low instrument noise. He says it is an acquisition made on September 5, 2021 at the H-alpha wavelength, made on a 65mm refractor with 420mm focal length (TS model). The camera was an ASI178MM operating with 2x2 binning.

I ran this file through our most recent software and these are the files that it outputted (processing time was about10 seconds).

Since I specified what the pixel shift is between images (2 in the case of H-alpha and 1 in the case of H-beta), you question is "what is the dispersion of the spectrometer?" Using Ken's SimSpec SHG spreadsheet, I use the following input parameters: 100mm camera focal length; collimator-camera angle, approximately 35 degrees; grating 2400 l/mm; pixel size 2.4 microns. The spreadsheet says the dispersion at 656.3nm is 0.079 angstroms per pixel and 0.094 at 486.1nm.
