How to install new blocking filter for Quark Chromosphere

Post by Petrus »

This filter was recommended by Marktownley in a few threads earlier, such as viewtopic.php?p=343894&hilit=andover#p343894. I did not yet order one, but learned from the Solarchat, that Daystar Solarscout is using the same size blocking filter.

656FS02-12.5
656.3nm Bandpass Filter, HBW 1nm, 12.5mm dia.

I feel enlighted just like my new blocking filter now, I was able to see the difference between the dimmer old BF and the new one :)

It is very easy to change the blocking filter for Quark Chromosphere. There is a retaining ring locking blocking filter in its place. It was not tight so any tool or sharp nails will easily screw it loose. Be careful not to scratch the blocking filter. The blocking filter is not otherwise attached, it will just drop off from the chamber when turning Quark upside down. Drop a new one in, and screw the retaining ring carefully back in place.

The retaining ring is pretty small and light, so I recommend working above the table or surface where it is easy to find if it is dropped.

Of course, it is cloudy and rainy a few days from now, but I feel somehow relieved if this would offer little better views than my regular Quark. Etalon with Solarscout seems pretty good too, but need to figure out another adapter for it. I placed old and dimmed BF in the Solarscout. I always felt it too bright for my taste in visual use, this swap might turn out as win-win!

Thank you Mark, I was very close to sending my regular Quark to Daystar and that would cost arm and leg!

Is it the same filter that it’s on the quark or a different model?

I did the same a little while ago on my 7 year old Quark Chromo and it made a big difference as the view had really deteriorated this year with a severe lack of contrast.

It's now back to being as good as new for about 1/3 the price of replacing it (UK price when you add UK delivery and customs).
I have a good quark so well worth it to me.

Great to hear that! I think this is a great #QuarkAwareness to share with everyone. Especially those who have the opportunity to buy second-hand Quark Chromosphere (like me), but the blocking filter is an issue.
