More high-res H-alpha SHG images (July 16)

Post by thesmiths »

Learning to use our SHG is a bit like learning to play a new musical instrument. With continued practice, the results go from embarrassing to more and more pleasing.

In the first image we managed to get a good focus across the most of middle segment of the solar disk, where most of the action is happening. We cropped the top parts off of the full disk scans since the quality drops there. This one looks best if you "Open the image in a new tab".

H-alpha SHG. 700mm FL, 106mm aperture. 2400 l/mm holographic grating, 9 micron lithographic slit. Stack of the best 9 of 19 frames. Imppg, Photoshop. Data acquired 07:17 to 07:22 UTC.

The focus in the first image is actually optimal a little below the equator, so we played with the focus knobs a bit to get the upper portion a bit more spot on. This one looks good if you just click on the image.

I've added inverted versions of these images in the SolarChat forum viewtopic.php?t=37131. This this instance, because of all the filaments, etc, the inverted view is quite appealing (I normally prefer non-inverted -- and un-coloured!).
