High-resolution spectroheliograph images (July 16) -- inverted! -- Clouds on the Sun

I LOVE finding out about different ways to appreciate the Sun and light in general. Use this forum to post your info or questions about various outside the mainstream ways to appreciate our life giving star!

High-resolution spectroheliograph images (July 16) -- inverted! -- Clouds on the Sun

Post by thesmiths »

I don't normally do inverted images but the post from Marty Wise (viewtopic.php?t=37109) inspired me to give it a go in this case. These are scans with our spectroheliograph (SHG) that we have described previously. In this first one, the focus is good over most of the central region. In the second, we managed to improve the focus a bit for the upper part. In the third one, we tried to perfect the focus on the bottom area but the seeing had by that time deteriorated so it's not quite as sharp as the two previous ones. Click on the images to see at higher resolution.

For the non-inverted versions, see our post in the Solar Radio, Magnetometry and Spectroscopy section: viewtopic.php?t=37130, which also has some additional technical details. My feeling is SHG images give the impression of higher resolution than a comparable aperture (the refractor used here only has an aperture of 106mm), perhaps because the much narrower bandwidth increases the feature contrast versus other imaging methods.

Wow, that's from a SHG? I would never have guessed with great resolution and what looks to have been super steady seeing. Excellent results (and your other thread with the natural image). I will have to read more about your instrument and methods, this is awesome!

Very best,

And the beauty of an SHG is that they can image in any spectral line. Not only in the popular Ha and CaIIK spectral lines. 👍🏻

Does that mean the Sun has weevils? :?
