Full Disk and West Limb Animation 7/21/2022

Post by rigel123 »

I really like using ImPPG for blacking out my blown out disks because it can automate the process so easily. What I am not thrilled about is how the black invades any prom that starts getting really bright! But I digress! Some wonderful action from that huge prom field on the Western Limb this morning with totally cloudless skies and decent seeing! The animation is 1 hour 25 minutes in real time. Lunt LS60T DS, ASI174MM, Meade 3X TeleXtender for the animation

Without the disk blacked out. Although there is still drift in the image I feel it is less distracting.

I think is an excellent result, even if the wiggly black limb dances. It's all about find a efficient way of doing these things and your method works. Can you remind us with a screen grab from ImPPG how you black out the overblown disk?

Thanks Mark, Alexandra and Franco! Hey Mark, posting a screen capture of ImPPG and the curve I use to blacken a blown out disk. The nice thing is that I can add the sharpening and curve adjustments all at the same time to hundreds of frames in one step so it definitely speeds up the process. I need to watch some other tutorials as others use different methods for a nice solid black out disk but this relies on excellent alignment of the frames or you get dancing of the limb. Blacking out the disk allows ImPPG to do a better job of aligning the frames as well. I should ask Filip how he gets such good alignment when the disk is not blacked out with ImPPG. It has never worked for me.

Curve in ImPPG I simply place an anchor and then drag the far right side down and back into the histogram far enough to create what looks like a fairly smooth edge. The issue is when a prom/surge/flare erupts it brightens to the point that the black follows that very blown out area.
