DS or Quark..

Post by Alto »

Hi all,

May I pick your brains and thoughts.

What would be a better option for me.

To DS my ls60tha at ~£2.6k - at least remote operating is possible; or
Quark Chromo, in spite of its need to warm up and limited option for remote, at ~£1.5k + extra filter.

The latter might work on my Lunt, or will work on my 4inch refractor...

Any views? Imaging opportunities seem few in number these days, not had
any real chances for some weeks due to cloud.

Geoff

As visual-only observer, with my setup - ED 80 f/7.5, I always prefer 80 mm aperture vs 54 mm stopped because of details.
If you have a good seeing for Solar - 4" aperture will show a lot of detail on Sole, so I would go Quark.

I went with the Quark [combo] version because i have a lot of scopes, so i thought that will be a better option than just a dedicated solar scope at fix certain aperture, i want to have flexibility more, so i hope i can use this Quark and see if i did right choice.

Quark is going to give you hi-res, the DS on the Lunt is going to give you higher contrast full disks.

FLO have a reduced Quark combo for sale at the moment.

What is the difference between the hi-res and high contrast? And which one you prefer if so?

The quark also has a built in barlow making full disc very impractical except for mosaics.
The Quark will work on your 4 inch refractor but you will need a ERF in front as well for such a large aperture. (additional expense). The Quark and the ERF may end up about the same price as getting the DS as well.
You may want to just look at some examples taken with both options and base your decision of those results.

Hey Geoff.

You could do the best of both worlds option - get a LS50C etalon (you will need a m80 to m90 adapter) to double stack the LS60, and also get a Quark - you might have a UV/IR cut or Ha filter you can already use as a sub aperture ERF.

This would cost the same as a 60mm double stack unit for the Lunt.

Looks like a Quark option is the quicker way, as Lunt DS filters seem rarer than hen's teeth!
