Full disc - Sunday 07/08/2022 Quark

Post by Radon86 »

Hi All !

Here is my Full disc of today, Sunday 07/08/2022, I started setting up around 08:50 hours and have finally got a reasonable image. I could not get the orientation exactly as in GONG today.

I have used basic ImPPG and then Photoshop (levels) to get the image. I have not attempted further localised sharpening perhaps masked in some places to even up the image throughout entire disc.

I have found that the flats can be tricky to get right with a focal reducer in place, and noise as well.

Details:
Location: London, UK
Time: 09:13 UT (10:13 BST Summer time)
Telescope ED70 F6
Camera: ASI 174mm
Mount: Skywatcher EQ3 Pro
Aperture stop applied: 45mm [original 70mm]
H-alpha: Quark chromosphere filter (on +2 setting)
ERF: 2 inch H-alpha (35nm bandwidth)
Antares 2 inch focal reducer mounted on Rowan adaptor to the Quark
Image acqured in Firecapture
Stacked n AS!3 and then deconvolution and sharpening in ImPPG
PS for levels and finishing.
No further sharpening or tone mapping HDR done.
File saved as .tif and .jpg (show .jpg version here)

Hi Magnus,

Great image.
I could not get the orientation exactly as in GONG today.
Look at some full disc images in this forum and you will see that you need to rotate 180° and done.

Look at Arne Danielsen's image of today. viewtopic.php?t=37443 Having that, the next days you will know if your orientation is correct.

Would you post an image of your setup ? Especially the rear end of the telescope with camera etc. If you setup daily new just remember to have everytime the same orientation of your pieces. Then disc will be the same everyday. Thanks.

Hi Rainer,
Thanks for the great advice. Because GONG are not reliable I did not bother trying to align my disc.
Because I use the extension tubes (no diagonals), I forgot today, when imaging you have to :
Reverse X (Flip X)
and reverse Y (Flip Y), this will bring the sun the right way up and also left-right direction !

(I usually use a diagonal, and do not usually bother with flipping my image during acquisition).

Yes, I made a diagram of my setup somewhere, I will try and find it now....

Very nice image, Magnus!

There are some uneven sharpness across the disk. This could be from the stacking process... at least I think I have experienced something similar caused by poorly chosen AP-size in AutoStakkert. Try playing with different AP size as well as with and without Multi-Scale ticked to see if that can help.

Best regards,
Arne

Hi Arne,

Thanks for this advice. Do you advise smaller AP size or larger ? I was thinking of making a separate sharpening layer for the larger active regions which are more blurred and occur more centrally. I will have a look at the separate frames to see what the problem could be. Unless the field is not very flat ! (the sun is not a flat object ?)

Thank you

I'm note sure if smaller or larger works best. I would just advice you to process the same file with different settings and compare. I'm using 48 and 64 with Multi-Scale enabled for my FD images using 178mm and 183mm respectively.

Best regards,
Arne
