Fantastic solar afternoon with NicSpencerYork

Post by Montana »

This afternoon Nic Spencer (nicspenceryork) visited for the afternoon and she brought sunshine with her!!! she can visit any weekend

She brought me my favourite flower (Rudbeckia) and we chatted away all afternoon, it was wonderful :)

I had the Solarscope out and after its usual 45 minutes it was on band and we had some lovely visual views. The sky was a bit hazy and seeing a bit poor over the neighbours house but we had a good imaging session and took a full disc. We then went through the processing and Photoshopping and she got to see how I'm not very talented at all and I don't do much

So here are a few pics of a lovely afternoon :girl:

Thanks Nic for visiting, it really made my weekend :)

The best thing I see is two women at the scope. I just don’t see that a lot here. But that may be slowly changing as women get more into STEM related activities here in the U.S.

Hat’s off to both of you!!

Great FD image Alexandra and Nic :bow

Nice to see you both busy at the scope and the final results. I always like the garden pics at your place...I think you are setup on the opposite side of the garden that we used back in 2019...to get the later day sun.

Thanks everyone for the very kind words :) yes it was fabulous to find a lady as passionate about the Sun as me :hamster:

Rainer, Brian hit the nail on the head, my garden is so enclosed that to see the Sun in the morning I have to be on the other side of the garden (where I viewed with him in 2019). In the afternoon I have to swap sides and image from this side (above) but sadly it is over the neighbours house so the seeing is poor. In the UK the weather is so rarely nice I have to move around to grab what opportunities I can. This year it has been so rare to get morning Sun, I think I have only set up the once on that side which would have been very bad if I had a permanent set up there ;)
Oh how I wish I had an observatory though.

Hi Alexandra,
Those mounts and equipment look heavy, I think I would struggle with having to move it all the time.
Good luck with your observatory. Maybe one in the mountains e.g. Hawaii or in space by remote access would be ideal !

I have to move around a lot in the cold weather months when the sun is low, depending on the time of day. I usually go to the left side of the house or use the driveway. The warm weather months see me use the back deck. That will end late September early October as the sun gets lower. I can now already tell the lengthening of the shadows from the trees in the back garden. Fall is coming. Winter follows.

I'm so very grateful to have enjoyed such a special experience with you Alexandra. It was such a pleasure to meet you having admired your images for so long. What a thrill to see the details on the sun through your equipment first hand and also sit with you as you processed the image.
... what's this about not being talented?! It's true that your kit reveals a great deal more fine detail than anything I've ever seen, but remember that it wouldn't show any of that beauty if it wasn't so carefully and skilfully fine tuned by your very talented self! You'll always be an inspiration.
With huge appreciation,
Nic
