9th Aug Sunspot movements

Post by JohnW »

9th August .... Today I have posted three pics of sunspots to show their movement over 5 days (2 days apart). They were taken on the 4th, 6th and 8 th of August. All single exposures with a Canon 550d camera attached to a WO 81 mm refractor and herschel wedge at 540 nm wavelength.
Thanks for viewing.

Super white lights John :bow :hamster: I could easily see these lovely spots through the Lunt Sunoculars the other day, I'm very pleased with them.

Thank you for your comments. Notice that there is a small sunspot between AR 3071 and 3074 in the third image.
Some people regard these images as "white lights" but I do not. They are taken with a Baader narrow band filter centred around 540 nm. I also use a UV/IR cut filter that removes any UV and IR wavelengths. This leaves a very pure filter. This gives a much better image than a white light which includes all the visible wavelengths. You do not get an image like a H alpha filter / etalon combination does but I would not call it white light. The Baader Continuum filter is poorly named. Perhaps others might like to comment ?

Technically you are right John. 540nm is not continuum but a part of the green spectrum. I use “ continuum “ or “ WL “ in my posts because it’s a continuum filter to view the photosphere as white light would. But yes, you are right.

Nice showing of the spot movements too! 👍🏻

We had the exact same discussion here John a while a go viewtopic.php?p=305246&hilit=white+light+continuum#

I think the conclusion was that these filters were so broad at around +/- 8nm (80A) (like the Baader K line filter) or 10nm for Baader Continuum (100A) that they are in fact filters which show the photosphere in a certain colour to enhance certain features. The Baader K line doesn't show Calcium K, but photosphere with enhanced faculae across the disc. Baader Continuum doesn't show the whole continuum, but the photosphere in green light with enhanced granulation. It is a very good question and debate :)
