Re: Shooting through the clouds
Nice work, Minh.
Is this with the ASI174mm or Apollo M Max camera?
Why not put the earth in for scale, would that be easier ?
How did you put the scale on, seems very complicated.

Re: Shooting through the clouds
@Alexandra: I remember reading somewhere the diameter of the sun is measured at the edge of the photosphere. Is it true?
@Magnus: this is from my Apollo M Max. My 174M is retired since I got the new, bigger chipped and better in every single way M-Max. The annotation is actually very simple. Just use this https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid= ... TI0ZmUyNTg import it into photoshop, overlay it on your picture and then scale and rotates the ruler to match with your image
Minh.

Re: Shooting through the clouds
Hi Mark,
What do you think of this large pixel camera, Apollo M Max?
I ordered it from Player One, and then cancelled it after having second thoughts after advice from Mark Townley.

Re: Shooting through the clouds
It's really depends on what kind of solar scope are you using. If you are using unbarlowed solar scope/filter like the lunt/coronado then the you better pair the M-Max with a high magnification barlow (at least 3x and up) otherwise you would waste the resolution on undersampling because of the big pixel size (9 um) of the sensor.
If you are using it with an already barlowed filter like the Quark (non-combo version) then it works exceptionally well. Big pixel size, fast frame rate, global shutter... all are speciafically made for solar with a Quark.
I bought the M-Max as an upgrade from my 174M and never turned back. It's just a better in every single way imagineable camera for solar from my 174M (which already exceptional on its own).
Minh.

Re: Shooting through the clouds
Like Minh has alluded, if you are using f40+ it will work well, below this focal ratio and you are undersampling, which, is effectively loosing system resolution.

Hi,
I practised the Solar scaling template which Minh used on an old file which Montana sent to us a few years ago for Starry Jack.
Here it is:

Re: Shooting through the clouds
Hi Alexandra,
I had another go at the Reg-Solaire template. I have got a different result this time. I think the scale is in the picture but the dimensions are different. I cannot understand the French instructions, so I do not know if I have done it correctly.

Re: Shooting through the clouds
Hi,
French instructions: typed into Google translate:
importer le pdf sur la photo du soleil, ajuster la taille du cercle interieur sur la photosphere et operer une rotation de ce calque, afin d'aligner la regle centrale et l'element a mesurer
English output in Google translate: import the pdf on the photo of the sun, adjust the size of the inner circle on the photosphere and rotate this layer, in order to align the central ruler and the element to be measured
Which version is correct, the first 1, or version 2, or neither ?
