CaK 10th August

Post by marktownley »

Hi All.

We have our 'heatwave' here in the UK at the moment (read it's summer!), and while we have temperatures in the low 30s and cloudless skies all day and night it does mean that there are only really a couple of hours after sunrise for solar before the seeing collapses. I've been making the most of the mornings to tinker with my CaK filter, something i've been wanting to do for sometime.

While with filters it is not possible to get the features Douglas and others get with their SHG views in this wavelength, with some work it is possible to see features higher in the chromosphere that off the shelf CaK filters might struggle with.

Close ups were taken at 80mm f15 with the zwo183mm camera.

Looks like there are some jets emerging from the smaller active region on the left?

The chromospheric fringe and proms are now easily visible:

The full disk was taken with the ED80 stopped down to 60mm at f10 with the zwo183mm. The proms and spicule layer are taken in 'one shot' and use shadows and highlights to bring them out more.

As each day has gone by this week, the CaK filter has evolved a bit more, there's a few more things I want to do yet that should reduce scattered (out of focus) light a little more, which should improve proms a bit more yet. All good fun tinkering!

Hope you like

Mark

What make of filter are you tinkering with?

These look good. I always enjoy your CaK work.

Here's a rough and ready view of the CaK proms on the FD...

Bit of scatter and ghosting, nothing an intrepid tinkerer can't deal with ;)

Great CaK shots Mark crisp and clear. Very well done. The thought went through my mind to do the same thing today but the clouds had the final say. Good that you had some clear sky’s to get some imaging done.

It's a Bresser 127/1200 stopped down to 80mm (f15).

Very detailed CAK images Mark, like the proms in CAK on the edge.

Beautiful CaK work, Mark!

I'm particularly impressed with how you manage to get the prom and spicules as well as the disk.

Best regards,
