Sun in Whitelight 7th September 2022 New camera test.

Post by steveward53 »

First light with the new 24.1Mp EOS 2000D  (Rebel T7)

Still some creases to iron out but I'm very happy with the first shots.

Seeing was pretty poor so hoping for better results in still air.

Thanks Mark ,

Interestingly I realised that the above image was actually made from a test set I made capturing in Large JPEG mode , as was today's single frame.

The JPEGs come out at 4Mb each @ 6000 x 4000 px and transfer very rapidly , whereas the RAW files are about 25Mb each and take ages to transfer and convert to TIFFs for PIPP and AS!3 so I'll keep trying with JPEGs to start , if only to bust another 'myth' about only shooting RAW ...

I need to find a scrap of ND5.0 Baader film though , the ND3.8 + Oiii combination is a little too bright for the 2000D which is a lot more sensitive it seems.

There is a shutter effect that starts darkening the top of the disc at 1/800s (evident above) which gets worse as you go faster and shooting at 1/640s is overexposing which is the opposite of what I prefer (no recovering saturated pixels as you know)

The ND5.0 will give me some wiggle room to experiment with settings wise , there's a myth associated with the shutter speed that recommends 1/1000s or faster , but having caught good detail through cloud down to 1/40s before I can dispel that.

I'll get there eventually ... only used it the once.

Interesting Steve. I reverted to using JPegs for shooting my aurora timelapse (but not managed to get one for a couple of years) for exactly the same reasons as above.
