More then 4 weeks ...

Post by rsfoto »

... gave me time to work ...

Hi,

... on a homework.

A friend has the idea that he wants to play chess with a Robotic arm and so the project was born.

After 4 weeks eg. started August 10th the hardware is more or less finished and the testing of the motors has started in order to see how they behave especially in regard to the torque ...

Here is the result of 4 weeks designing and testing and printing parts ... The chess board was made by another friend and BTW it is the first one he makes ...

Now comes the hard part for my friend      who wants to program it ...

Thanks for looking and still cloudy here ...

Very cool

Definitely keep us updated once it's programmed and fully functional; would love to see it.

Well done Rainer :hamster: are you going to be controlling it as an AI chess player or are you operating the arm to play for you?

Hi,

That is a question for my friend who is the programmer and so far he told me that he wants the arm to make the movements directed by a chess engine like Stockfish or whatever he has in mind so more or less AI

I am just the mechanical developer. The second motor tests went well so far. The positional repeatability is quite good judged by eye and some limit switches which I still need to connect. I will do some test by just lighting up some LED's connected to the switches. Need to decide if full step or microstepping. Microstepping is nice but brings problems in regard to torque which means also stopping at the same point every time.

Thanks for looking

Hi Rainer,

Fascinating project.
My challenge to you, is to enable the robot to play rapid chess or even better, blitz chess !!!

I think it should be relatively easy to program the moves from 1 square to another. Its the speed and accuracy and not dropping the pieces. The alternative is to just ask the human to move the pieces !!!

Most people would concentrate on the chess engine - computing the moves.

Moderators please tell me if this is not off topic here Thanks

Hi Magnus,
I think it should be relatively easy to program the moves from 1 square to another.
Have you thought about that ?

This is a 3D dimensional movement.

Turret = left to right and right to left = yes, just define the angle = steps for every field from A1 to H8 equals to 64 angles Piece of cake

Shoulder/Elbow is a SIN(angle) of the distance necessary to Elbow and then another SIN(angle) or COS(angle) or TAN(angle to Elbow/Wrist
