Belated Ca K images / July 10 / Taka TOA 150

Post by christian viladrich »

Hi,
Now here are some Ca K images taken on July 10 with a double-stack configuration (Alluxa 0.37 nm + Barr 0.26 nm) and the TOA150.

The full-disk image :
http://astrosurf.com/viladrich/astro/so ... SI1600.jpg

The same image with different vizualisation to show prominences :
http://astrosurf.com/viladrich/astro/so ... 00-ddp.jpg

For comparison, an image of the photosphere. We can see that the location of the facular regions visible with the 396-5nm filter matches the location of Ca K bright plages:

One of the two groups showing a small flare :

The other group :

Clear skies

Stunning images as always Christian.

How much distance have you between the Barr and the Alluxa filters in the optical train?

Thanks to all !

Stu, the distance between the Barr and the Alluxa filters is about 10 mm. You can have a look at the setup here :

http://astrosurf.com/viladrich/astro/in ... onomik.jpg

However, when I double-stack the Alluxa 0.37 nm with the Alluxa 0.15 nm, I definitely need more spacing (40 mm or more), otherwise I have huge glaring. I still have to optimize this second setup. It is a bit tricky.

I thought they were close based on prom full disk image.

I also found the same thing as you, and have my 2 CaK filters with as much distance as possible, this pretty much gets rid of all glaring and lowers the black point (close to 0).

Could you mount one of the filters on the nose of the FFC to get a bit more distance?

Mark

Hello Mark
I wouldn't try it for two reasons :
- the filter would be exposed to the f/7 focus. That would be a lot of energy over a small surface. I already cracked a Baader K-line this way ...
- because of the f/7 focus, the FWHM would broaden.

I am more or less thinking of trying the AiryLab telecentric instead of the FFC in order to have more flexibility in the distance between the Ca K filters.
Or maybe go back to the Basler 1920-155. Its larger pixels would mean a larger distance to the FFC. Still, I remember I had a lot of glaring when I used the Basler and the Ca K filters.
I need to make some systematic testing there ...

Hiya Christian

Ahhh yes, f7 is going to fry things very quickly, not thought of that!

I've been very impressed with the Airylab telecentric for CaK, but I always run it on an f10 system, not sure what would be like on f7. It would certainly give you more distance to play with for filter spacing.

Another fantastic collection, Christian!

I'm particularly impressed with the high-res and the CaK prominences.
