Reply from Marty Wise on CN ...

"You can capture proms with wider bandpass filter systems. There's nothing behind them (space) that is brighter (ie, no photosphere)."

"You can see them with no filter at all, during an eclipse, because the disc is masked and there's nothing behind the prom."

if you're on here Marty could you elaborate please ... ?

Steve, are you aware of the Carrington event? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrington_Event I caught that flare in H alpha It was bright.

So, Martin confirmed we had a small bright surge visible with a "narrowband" 12 nm Ha filtre.
Very interesting.
The Sun is full of surprise !

It probably would be possible in an off band Ha filter tuned high which shows more photosphere.

In a 12nm wide Ha filter it would indeed be a surprise. That was an intense one!! Martin's image shows some double limb and chromosphere too.

Martin's image is from a Hydrogen-alpha rig not a "white-light + 12nm Ha" set-up ...

viewtopic.php?t=38110

His chromosphere image from the same time is just confirming that there was indeed a flare and prominence there at the time ...
