September 21 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:30 until 15:30 UTC. Clear skies with just above average seeing falling to just below by session's end. The temperature is a warm 77F ( 25C ) at 15:15 UTC.

Today is visual only at the scopes with no problem with tuning, mounts and clouds unlike yesterday!! I did capture a couple of snapshots from the Slooh live feed from their Lunt 60 on Teide during the session.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see six areas of activity in the Ha chromosphere today. One in the Northern Hemisphere and five in the Southern Hemisphere. Three of those in the south are numbered on the KSO images.

The only activity at all that I can see in the northern hemisphere is in the NW quadrant and is a couple of very tiny close together plages that look more like tiny " sparks " in the chromosphere. Though small I found then right away on pinning down their exact location. Though I counted them as a single AR they can hardly be called ' active ". Several filaments lie to their north and I readily see one in the far NE quad with a less apparent one well north of it.

The SW quadrant shows a plage near the limb. East of it lies the large bright plage of AR13102 with four visible spots. A couple of filaments lie NW of the plage. Three regions are seen in the SE quadrant. The westernmost one is a fairly bright plage above a thin semicircular filament. Just east of that plage lies the plage complex of AR13105-06. Though magnetically two I see them as a single bright complex jutting in from the SE limb. Some spots can be seen within the plage(s). The plage center is the brightest.

Several small prominences can be seen around the limb but I paid little attention to them.

The usual mottles are seen across the disc.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x and 62.5x ( WL )
First off I see no detail in the Northern Hemisphere at all except for the fine granulation of the photosphere. The Southern Hemisphere shows five active regions with the KSO showing three with labels.

AR13102 in the SW quadrant is seen having four spots with umbra-penumbra structure. The two SW spots are close together but separated. A light bridge is seen in the umbra of the westernmost spot. Pores are seen between the paired spots. Two larger pores are seen on the SE end of the group. West of the SE quadrant's numbered active regions ( KSO ) I see a group of one small spot and three pores. The pores are all but invisible by session's end. AR13105 is seen as a sizeable spot in the far SE quadrant. I see evidence of a broken umbra surrounded by a penumbra. Three pores are seen SE of it. Just NW of it lies it's close companion AR13106. It appears as a ragged group of spots with pores strung between them. Umbrae are tattered and multiple and penumbrae are shared. This looks like a group with flare potential!! AR13105 and AR13106 form a complex in the SE quadrant. Faculae can be seen surrounding them, especially AR13105 since it is nearer the limb. Going back to the SW limb I find a patch of scattered faculae there.

The fine granulation of the photosphere is easily seen during the first half of the observing run.

You obviously put in a lot of effort to create your reports, James. They are always appreciated :)

Sounds like it is the southern hemisphere that is rocking at the moment :hamster:

It is. I am hoping for some M or X class flares!

Stu,
I do. I use all the resources I can when doing my session reports like GONG, SDO, KSO and the Slooh live feed in addition to my own scopes. I use the online data to help me find details in the scope and Slooh is more like simple single capture imaging like I sometimes do with my own scopes but it one located 3000+ miles away. And then there is the note taking and typing it down here in finished form. Unlike some here I am not a photo/imaging hobbiest but my primary interest in in learning about the Sun whether it is through hands on visual or imaging or through professional or remote sources. I really enjoy it. The Sun is very fascinating and You and other SolarChat members make it even more rewarding.

And knowing these session reports are valued here and appreciated makes it all more worthwhile.

Thanks Stuart!! :D

James
