September 25 2022 observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:30 until 15:45 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy and though not quite as bad as yesterday the seeing is still below fair/average. The temperature is 69F ( 20.5C )

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x and 50x ( Ha )
Today I got six active regions in the Ha chromosphere. Three in the northern hemisphere with two of these bearing numbers. The southern hemisphere shows three active regions, all numbered.

AR13110 in the NE quadrant shows itself as a spot with a plage to it's NE. Two filaments are seen just beyond that plage. A small unnumbered plage is seen near/at the CLM. It's not really difficult to see. GONG CTIO Ha shows a couple more plage " sparks " NNW and NW of this one. I did not see them, probably because of thin obscuring clouds. AR13109 is seen in the NW quadrant not much above the equator. It appears as a small but easy plage. I notice a north polar crown of filaments in the far north latitudes.

AR13108 is easily seen in the SW quadrant as a spot with plage to it's NE. Two curved filament lie SE of it. One is the loop filament that has been visible over the last several days. It looks more like a letter " C " now. AR13105 and AR13106 is seen as a patchy line of bright plage in the SE quadrant. Some of their spots can be made out as well as intermingling filaments though I don't see the number of filaments that my images picked up yesterday. The easiest to see filament is just south of the large spot of AR13105. I see no trace of AR13106 just NW of AR13105. A filament lies just SE of AR13107 and three more are well NE of it.

I notice some small bush-like proms on the eastern limb and more proms on the NW limb. The big SE prom of yesterday is gone.

Chromospheric spicule mottling covers the disc.

Celestron NexStar 102 GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm Baader filter. 55x and 62.5x ( WL )
I can see six active regions on the 540nm photosphere today. Two in the northern hemisphere with both having NOAA numbers. Four regions are seen in the southern hemisphere with all four bearing numbers.

AR13110 shows itself as an easy spot group in the NE quadrant. A large symmetrical spot leads them westward. I can see a single thin light bridge in the SE side of it's umbra and the penumbra shows itself easily though I cannot see no detail within it, probably because of the seeing. Five pores lie to it's east. The eastern side of the group is a mixed intertwined mass of pores, spots intermingled in penumbrae. Two more diffuse spots lie just to their NE. Faculae from this system stretches ENE almost to the limb and another small detached facula lies north of these near the limb. SDO shows a small lone pore well east of the leading spot. I did not see it. SDOHMIc also shows three tiny pores where Ha saw a plage at the CLM. I did not see these pores. AR13109 shows itself in the NW quadrant as four spots/pores with the two larger spots being to the west of the other two.

Faculae can be seen at the SW limb. They belong to the receding AR13102. I see no spots or pores here. WNW of AR13102 lies AR13108. Here I see two leading spots, one structured with a number of smaller spots and pores to the SE. AR13107 and AR13105 appear as a broken line of spots in the SE quadrant. They are still a tattered bunch with irregular umbrae and penumbrae. Strangely the largest spot trails the group in AR13105. The group somewhat has an anthropomorphic form looking like a man with a clubbed foot and is that a ball he is carrying inter his arm? With that weird head shape he's gotta be wearing a helmet!! This can be seen in the scope but is even more apparent in the SDO HMI continuum image. I see no trace of AR13106 just to the NW.

The fine granulation takes a close look to see at all today.

Carpe Diem!

James

Great description James although I think you have a better imagination than me. I've looked at AR13105 for a while and can't see the man with the clubbed foot :)

I noticed it first in the SDO images and then found it in the scope. Each of us sees things differently I guess.
