September 29 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:40 until 15:46 UTC. Somewhat intermittent. The skies are partly cloudy with fast-moving cumulus-type clouds. The seeing is well below average to poor. The temperature is 56F ( 13.3C ) at 15:00 UTC. Quite windy.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see eight areas of activity in the Ha chromosphere today. Five in the northern hemisphere with two having NOAA numbers ( SWL ). Three are seen in the southern hemisphere with two having NOAA assigned numbers ( SWL ).

I can see what appears as a " ripple " near the NE limb. GONG CTIO Ha shows it to be a filament with a really bright region under it. Due east of it lies AR13111 which is visible as a spot with a small plage SSE of it. Despite the poor seeing I am able to make out three more tiny plages in the vicinity nearby. Another probably separate system plage is seen further to the NW. AR13110 which is on/at the CLM shows itself as a spot among plage with a curved filament above the NE part of the plage. A tiny plage is seen in the NW quadrant. Scattered filaments are seen in the far north latitudes and the remains of a polar crown that terminate into a small prominence is visible in the far NNW.

AR13105 is visible as an easy plage in the SW quadrant now approaching the limb. A filament is seen in it's SE side. Just SE of AR13105 lies AR13107 which is seen as an easy plage. Despite the seeing I could see three thin filaments there emanating from the spot. Four really easy filaments are seen east of AR13107. A small plage is seen under the largest one well NE of AR13107 in the SE quadrant. Another thin wavy snakelike filaprom is visible in the SE quadrant.

Several small proms are seen around the limb. One on the SE limb whose southern component is a filaprom has a connecting bridge of plasma between the two brighter components.

The mottles are easily seen, as usual but are softened a bit by the seeing.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 31x ( WL )
The seeing seems to be impacting white light fine details worse than Ha so I have kept the magnifications low. I can see five areas of activity on the white light photosphere. Two in the northern hemisphere with both carrying NOAA labels. ( SWL ). Three are visible in the southern hemisphere with two carrying NOAA number labeling ( SWL ).

AR13111 in the NE quadrant shows a structured spot with faculae heading NE towards the limb. AR13110 near the CLM shows an easy round spot with the umbra and penumbra easily visible in moments of better seeing and marginally visible during worse seeing moments. Two large pores are seen to it's SW and an unresolved pore cloud to the east of the large spot can be seen as a shaded area.

AR13105 is seen as a couple of small spots amid faculae nearing the SW limb. To it's SE lies AR13107 Which can be seen as a larger leading spot which does show some detail ( umbra and penumbra ) during moments of better seeing. A line of pores lies due east, most of which individuals I cannot resolve and two more larger pores are seen just beyond those to the ENE. A patch of faculae is seen near the SE limb.

I did not notice any granulation at all today.

Carpe Lumen!

James

I'll be getting heavy rain from it this evening, tonight and in the morning. Wind speeds up to 50mph.

Nice report James! I think I need to take the sunoculars to work with me now the sun is getting lower, got more chance of observing that way in winter season.

Yep. Keep em' close by. They can be a session saver. The Sun is significantly lower in Britain than in NC.
