One filaprom and two little proms 30 Sep 2022

Post by BGazing »

There was a bit of Sun through cirrus cover, low at around 20-25 degrees and the limb was undulating in waves, so I expected bad numbers. I honestly just wanted to test FC and SSM trigger and was surprised by the good numbers SSM has actually shown. Could it be precisely because of the cirrus? Two days before I tested it on blustery sky after rain and it showed predictable 3-3.5 arcsecs, this time, I could set trigger at 1.5 and cutoff at 1.9 for 3000 frames. It sorta worked...I left it at f/14, so critical sampling.
Seeing figures, to my surprise
Seeing values=0.64-1.95; Average 1.22
Seeing values=0.78-1.76; Average 1.29
Seeing values=0.85-1.90; Average 1.39
Could the numbers be low because of the cutoff? Average seeing figure was also quite good, not more than 1.7...which would be maximum resolution for my 80mm, it is just that I sample 3 pixels on that figure, but the resolution is an objective cap.

If someone knows about the quirks of SSM numbers, would love to hear. Bonus question...how do I smooth that magnetic lasso thing at the end?
Anyway, here are the shots, cirrus spoiled the disk details so I went for vignettes.

Thank you...but the thing is...I am not sure how accurate the numbers are, i.e. how affected are they by a thin cloud cover...
