October 2 2022 Observations.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

My session time was from 14:30 until 15:15 UTC. The skies were mostly cloudy with poor seeing. The temperature was 55F ( 12.7C ). Breezy.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I could see six active regions in the Ha chromosphere today. Four of these are in the northern hemisphere with all four bearing number labels ( KSO ). The southern hemisphere shows two regions with those too bearing labels.

The large scattered plage of AR13112 is easily seen in the NE quadrant. The NE part of the plage is a bit brighter than the rest. An M1.28 flare occurred just 25min before my session began and the area was still quite hot. AR13111 is visible mainly by it's spot. Strangely the active region is plageless. I can see a bit of plage well to the NE of the spot though. Two easy filaments lie between AR13112 and AR13111. The NW quadrant shows two active regions in close proximity. AR13113 and AR13110. They visually appear as one complex. AR13113 appears mainly as a backwards C shaped plage and AR13110 as a spot, plage and single small filament. Though nothing was noted here during the lime of my observations AR13110 blasted forth an X1.06 flare at 20:45 UTC.

AR13107 can be seen as a plage with a hint of a filament very near the SW limb. It'll be gone tomorrow. East of it lies three easy nearly E-W oriented filaments. AR13114 is seen in the SE quadrant as a low contrast plage south of an impressive long bowed filament. The bowed western end is wider and easier to see. Another thinner filament lies just west of AR13114. Other plage mottling is seen around the filaments.

Despite working in double-stack the proms are easily seen. I can see the majority of them that are shown on the GONG CTIO and KSO Ha images. I notice small detached prominences above the SE and SW limb with the SW one being easier to see and a bit larger. One on the NW limb is noted.

The chromospheric spicule mottles can be seen across the disc but are softened a bit by the seeing.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 41.5X ( WL )
Seven active regions were seen on the WL photosphere today. Four are in the northern hemisphere and all carry number labeling ( KSO ). Three are visible in the southern hemisphere with two carrying labels.

AR13112 in the NE quadrant shows itself as a fairly long mass of spots and pores. Though I can see some evidence of structure in it's more easternmost spots I can see the umbra and penumbra form of it's westernmost lead spot the best. Little fine detail is seen due to the poor seeing with it's near-constant blurring. Faculae can be seen around and just northeast of the group. A single lone pore lies just north of the central region of the group but needs moments of better seeing to be glimpsed. AR13111 is seen only as a single structured spot just east of the CLM. AR13113 is seen as a collection of six spots with the lead spot being the bigger of the group. Just to it's WNW lies AR13110 which also contains 6 counted spots. One at the southern end of the group shows umbra-penumbra structure.

AR13107 in the far SW quadrant is visible only as a patch of faculae. The SE quadrant shows AR13114 as three tiny spots. Another small spot is seen well to the NE.

I can see nothing of the disc granulation today.

I posted late today due to my daughter having to go to the hospital for vomiting and dehydration. She was diagnosed with a stomach virus and tested for COVID-19. We are awaiting the test results for COVID-19. Fortunately I had taken a few notes at the scope this morning and saved KSO relevant images to jog my memory. And today was my 58th trip around the Sun!

Carpe Noctem!

James
