Calcium Full Disk & Proms 2nd October
For a while on Sunday morning, following a low pressure area that passed quickly to the south of us, the skies has excellent transparency. In my experience transparency is the key in catching proms in CaK. Here is my full disk from the morning, taken with the ED80 stopped down to 60mm to give f10 at the homebrew filter with the ZWO183mm camera.

That is awesome Mark! That spike sure really shows up nicely as well as all of the proms!

Super FD, great to see such detail -simply love the proms and spicules. Are you still using the Chroma filter and PST CaK filter for the DS?

Re: Calcium Full Disk & Proms 2nd October
Awesome Mark, enjoyed comparing yours to what I caught with a freshly 3D printed 60mm aperture mask and a doubled capture rate!
Can I ask: is it better to do a 2 pane mosaic with the ASI178MM and no Barlow, or better to do a 10/12 pane with the ASI178MM a 2x Barlow? Which gives the best definition?
Thanks
Nic

Re: Calcium Full Disk & Proms 2nd October
Thanks everyone for your comments!
Nic. Personally, If you are using the 178mm I would do it prime focus with the 60mm f10, this gives nice sampling in CaK. I've been down the mosaic route and it just bugs me, especially at CAK which is more sensitive to seeing the individual panels will have varying degrees of sharpness. It might annoy you it might not. Using a 2x barlow and doing a mosaic with even more panels is just going to exarcerbate the issue; you also have more glass which will increase softness and you will be oversampling, which again will increase softness, both also increasing exposure time. The ED80 at 60mm is an absolute gem of a performer in CaK and is optically transparent more so than other scopes I own, so letting through more light (shorter exposures). So, to answer your question not using a barlow will give better definition. If I had the 178 I would probably do hemisphere shots rather than 2 pane mosaics.

Re: Calcium Full Disk & Proms 2nd October
Sorry to double post. Finally getting round to processing some of the other images from Sunday:
After I had taken the full disk I decided to get out the 127/1200 scope and stop down to 80mm to give me f15 with the ZWO183mm camera. I shot off quite a few files but my gut feeling was the seeing just wasn't there for 80mm aperture, a quick run through AS3 and my thoughts were confirmed, so a change of setup...
So, still using the 127/1200 I stopped it back to 60mm at f20 and with the increase in focal ratio went for the zwo290mm with its slightly larger pixels (2.9um) for better sampling. At 164fps I was loading the dice with higher frame rate on my side. Stopping down to f20 also means less glass in the optical train so faster exposure time...
Anyways, an explore around the regions of interest!

That's great imaging Mark, your homebrew Cak setup is amazing.

Re: Calcium Full Disk & Proms 2nd October
Thank you, makes sense.
I’ll get the 183 sooner than later which, as you show, gives a great CaK full disc.
I always appreciate your explanations Mark,
Nic

Stunning CaK images Mark!
I'm particularly impressed with how you manage to get so much details in the spikes and prominences!
Best regards,
