Hi all
I am very happy with my new lunt 40mm - and for now I am learning to draw my observations.
But in the long run I would like to take images.
I have no experience with sun imaging. But I try to read as much as I can find on the subject.
I think the Apollo-m Max seems interesting because of its 100Ke full well and reduced noise. I would use a powermate 2.5 and make full disc images. I think the numbers look fine on astronomy.tools.
I can understand that "Max" is not the first choice for a Lunt scope - but thought it might be an option for ls40 f10 with a 2.5 Barlow.
What are your thoughts on such a setup?

No, I wouldn't recommend the Apollo Max at all for a Lunt 40, even using the 2.5x powermate. You don't leave yourself much room on the chip. I would get a zwo178mm and save yourself some $$$.

Re: Apollo Max for Lunt 40mm?
thank you very much for your answer.
What do you mean by I don't get much room on the chip?
Also, are there other problems to consider that I might encounter using the Apollo Max and the 40mm?

I also think you wont get much improvements using the max on full disk images. With bigger apertures and high mag work this might look different though.

The sun virtually fills the field of view, don't forget the size of the sun varies throughout the year, bigger in winter than summer.Soendergaard wrote: ↑Tue Oct 18, 2022 6:04 am

Re: Apollo Max for Lunt 40mm?
With the Apollo Max, 9um pixels, LS40 and 2.5x Barlow, you'll be very close to critical sampling. Disc will be a little over 1000 pixels across, so it will just fit, but you could end up losing prominences at the edges.
ASI178 is half the price, and doesn't need a Barlow for full disc. 1500 pixels across on a 2000x3000 sensor.
I'm using the ASI174 Mini, 5.86 um pixels, with an LS40 and 2x Barlow. I'm a little over-sampled, but it's what I've got. I need to use 2 panels to get a full solar disc. Disc ends up about 1300 pixels across. I went for the 174 because I also use it for guiding at 2000mm (binned) and I wanted the FOV to find guide stars.
Eric.

Re: Apollo Max for Lunt 40mm?
thanks EricF and Marktownley
I will take this into consideration.
I can see that there is not much room for prominences with the Apollo.
The ASI178 and ASI174 does seem to be good alternatives.
All the best

The 178 is the best alternative for this scope.
