October 22 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

This morning I observed from my Edneyville NC home leaving for my dad's in Lowndesville SC right after the session. I took a few notes and saved some professional images to help jog my memory when I sat down to record today's session much later in the evening. My session time was from 14:00 until 15:05 UTC. The skies were mostly clear with a few high thin clouds present. The seeing was below average and the temperature was 53F at 14:30 UTC. I did pack today's smaller kit in the car for a session tomorrow from my dad's place.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 25x and 33x. ( Ha )
I could see six active regions in the Ha chromosphere today. One in the northern hemisphere that carries no number as of yet. Five systems were seen in the southern hemisphere with three of these carrying NOAA numbers ( SWL ).

A sizable area of disturbance was seen in the NW quadrant. A filament was seen just east of it. GONG CTIO Ha shows a couple of other disturbances in the NW quadrant but I have nothing recorded down concerning these and I do not remember seeing them.

A scattered plage complex with a couple of fine filaments is seen nearing the SW limb. AR13128 is the northern part of this complex while the southern part is unnumbered. The filament near the limb showed noticeable height and depth. Well ENE of this complex lies the easily seen plage of AR13126 with a thin filament SW of it. A large scattered complex of plage lies in the SE quadrant. I could with some difficulty see some fine filaments within it. AR13127 is labeled at the SW side of this complex. A filaprom lies at the SE limb.

Two wonderfully bright prominences lie on the SW limb. One is a bright tall pointed prom. I can remember being able to hint tiny voids at its base. North of it lies a more bushy prom with a fainter one just south of it. The NW limb showed a nice prominence with some vertical striations visible within it and a void under it's narrower southern portion. A filaprom lies on the SE limb.

The discwide mottles are visible.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x. ( WL )
I could see five regions on the WL photosphere today. One unnumbered in the northern hemisphere and four in the southern hemisphere with three of these carrying NOAA labels ( SWL ).

I could see a low contrast scattered patch of faculae in the NE quadrant. I saw no spots or pores there.

AR13128 was seen as a spot and a pore among some inconspicuous faculae in the far SW quadrant near the limb. Just south of it lies another region with two spots surrounded by easier to see faculae. Well ENE of AR13128 lies AR13126. I saw it as a triplet of small spots/pores. AR13127 was seen SE of AR13126 across the CLM in the SE quadrant. It's seen only as two close together pores.

The granulation takes a close look to see. It's not noticeable at all.

Carpe Noctem!

James

Thanks for your detailed report, James.

I tried WL imaging yesterday and could hardly pull focus. Granulation was almost invisible for me too.

You are welcome Stuart. Poor seeing can indeed make focusing very difficult.
